The Houston Astros took hard-throwing reliever Josh Fields from the Boston system Thursday with the overall first pick in the draft of players left off 40-man rosters. The 27-year-old Fields was a combined 4-3 with 12 saves and a 2.01 ERA for Triple-A Pawtucket and Double-A Portland. The right-hander struck out 78 and walked 18 in 58 1-3 innings. There were 15 players picked in the major league portion of the Rule 5 draft. Teams pay $50,000 to select them and must keep them on the big league roster throughout 2013 or offer them back to the original club for $25,000. Steven Hill, who played nine games for St. Louis last season, was taken by Oakland in the Triple-A phase. He made his major league debut in 2010, homering in his only game that year for the Cardinals. Hill played first base, third base, the outfield and catcher in Triple-A last season.

Astros Get Rule 5 Steal

The jump from Double-A to the Majors is not an easy one, but that's just what the Houston Astros' Rule 5 selection Nate Freiman is going to do in 2013. The 8th round selection by the San Diego Padres in 2009 out of Duke University has done nothing but hit at every level along his minor league journey. Freiman stands 6'7" and weighs 225 pounds, so his frame suggests...

Q&A: Bo Porter, Managing the Analytic Astros

This past summer, Bo Porter — who then was the third-base coach for the Washington Nationals — sat down to discuss the philosophies he’d bring to a big-league managerial job. Earlier this week, he followed up on that interview, this time as manager of the Houston Astros. —— Porter on the Astros way: “Jeff [Luhnow] and the entire group we have is extremely entrenched into...

Rockies Continue to Confuse, Acquire Wilton Lopez

In a vacuum, you could probably make a decent enough case in favor of exchanging Alex White for Wilton Lopez. As Jeff wrote last week, Lopez is the game’s most extreme high GB/low BB reliever, and this skillset allows him to be an effective late inning reliever. Lopez is a quality arm, and he can be a key piece of a good bullpen. Meanwhile, White has been pretty lousy during...

Astros trade Lopez to Rockies for White, minor-leaguer

Right-hander Wilton Lopez, who finished last season as the Houston Astros' closer, was acquired by the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night. Houston received right-handed starter Alex White and minor league right-hander Alex Gillingham in the deal. Colorado also will get cash or a player to be named. Lopez likely will serve as a setup man in front of Rockies closer Rafael Betancourt...

Cardinals active in Minor League Rule 5 Draft

NASHVILLE, Tenn. Baseballs top executives met one final time before departing the winter meetings Thursday morning for the annual Rule 5 Draft. And the Cardinals were busy at the Minor League level.
