The Houston Astros are skipping Kyle Weiland for at least one turn in the rotation because of shoulder soreness, and they should know soon if he'll be out longer.

Weiland left the team after Wednesday's 7-5 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers to go back to Houston to see team physicians on the Astros off day.

Wandy Rodriguez will make the start in Weiland's place on Friday in Cincinnati, and he'll be followed by Lucas Harrell and Bud Norris, who will be on schedule like Rodriguez because of the off day. Weiland would be slotted back in his No. 5 spot Tuesday against the Mets if he's deemed healthy.

Weiland gave up three runs on six hits over a career-high seven innings and 105 pitches Saturday in a loss to the Dodgers. He said the soreness dated back further than that, though.

"It's been building up a little bit since late spring training," Weiland said. "Nothing too serious; it's stuff that I've felt before, and I want to stop it before it gets worse."

When the Astros broke spring training, they did so with an eight-man bullpen that's now down to seven, but there is no true long man. Should Weiland have to go on the disabled list, they can't just skip another start; a pitcher likely would come up from Class AAA.

Jordan Lyles, the last cut from the race for the major league rotation, has gotten off to a strong start at Oklahoma City and presumably would be a candidate. The 21-year-old right-hander is 4-0 with a 3.46 ERA and 24 strikeouts against only four walks in his four starts.
