Cuban defector Yoenis Cespedes is starting to look at home with the Oakland Athletics. Cespedes hit his first major league home run on Thursday to power the Athletics to a 4-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners that earned Oakland a split in the two-game season-opening series at Tokyo Dome. Cespedes, who signed a $36 million, four-year contract with Oakland on March 3, said he is starting to feel comfortable in his new surroundings. ''I wake up early every day and get to the field early and work hard because the baseball is different than in Cuba,'' Cespedes said. Cespedes connected for a two-run homer off Seattle reliever Shawn Kelley (0-1) to give Oakland a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh. Josh Reddick followed with a solo shot off George Sherrill to give the A's a two-run cushion. ''They tried to throw me sliders every at-bat, so I had to adjust to hit the ball,'' Cespedes said. ''It was great to hit a home run here for the Ja...

2012 season preview: Oakland Athletics

The Oakland Athletics had a difficult year last season, and how did they respond going into 2012? Simple, they blew up their team (again) and gave it another whirl. Nearly the entire starting rotation is new, and a good bit of the lineup is too. The A's don't look like contenders in the loaded AL West this season, but it's at least a different look for A's fans. ...

Mike Carp on IR with shoulder sprain

This week in Tokyo Seattle Mariners left fielder Mike Carp was placed on the 15-day disabled list. Not a great way to start your season. Carp suffered the injury diving for a double hit by Kurt Suzuki of the Oakland A's in game 1 of the MLB 2012 season's opening series in the Tokyo Dome. Your probably wondering how this came to be since Carp stayed in through the entire...

Mariners' Ryan proposes to girlfriend

The Mariners' season-opening trip to Japan provided shortstop Brendan Ryan with the perfect opportunity to pop the question, and Major League Baseball provided an assist. The 30-year-old told his longtime girlfriend he would be taking her on a tour of the city Tuesday, but the guide was actually an employee of Major League Baseball who was in on the plan. When the couple reached...

A’s ad stars Dallas Braden’s tattoo of Rollie Fingers riding a dolphin (video)

Your browser does not support iframes. Rollie Fingers is referred to as “an A’s legend” in the introduction to the latest commercial from the Oakland Athletics which promotes the mustachioed reliever’s upcoming Bobblehead Night on April 22. In a humorous bit, Rollie’s place in the pantheon of Oakland legends is not lost on current starting [...]

Mariners beat A's in 11th in opener

Dustin Ackley drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th inning and Ichiro Suzuki went 4 for 5 as the Seattle Mariners beat the Oakland Athletics 3-1 Wednesday in baseball's season-opener in Tokyo. Brendan Ryan doubled to lead off the 11th, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Chone Figgins and scored on Ackley's single to center. Suzuki then gave Seattle an insurance...

Josh Reddick Shows Off Championship Belt

Holy bling, Batman!  Have you seen Josh Reddick's championship belt? It's awesome. So, naturally, I had to reach out to and ask the Oakland A's outfielder who he was rooting for this weekend at WrestleMania 28...John Cena or The Rock."(I've) always rooted for Cena," Reddick told me. "He's always been about the business and takes pride in it. That...

Seattle Mariners 2012 opening day diary, at 3AM

Sports make people do crazy things.  Whether it’s the Little League father who feels the need to beat up a Little League umpire for calling a third strike on their six year-old son, or Bud Selig deciding to start the 2012 Major League Baseball season in Tokyo, Japan in the middle of spring training, sport causes insanity.  As a fan of baseball and a writer of sports, I’ve...

From fellow Yardbarker website Hall Of Very Good... Quote: "I couldn't tell the difference," Saunders said. "It was unbelievable. Full uni, the facial hair...

Season Preview: Oakland Athletics

The Oakland A’s (74-88) had a myriad of injuries to a few of their top-line starters, which directly hindered their chances of winning the AL West in 2011. For instance, Brett Anderson and Dallas Braden both were sidelined early in the year due to arm issues and missed most of 2011. For a team that
