The Athletics have agreed to sign Jonny Gomes, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports tweets. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reported yesterday that the A's were nearing a deal with the Petaluma, California native. Gomes, 31, posted a .209/.325/.389 line with 14 homers in 372 plate appearances for the Reds and Nationals in 2011. The ACES client has a career .311/.407/.456 line against left-handed pitching, so his skillset should complement left-handed hitting outfielders such as Seth Smith and Josh Reddick. Conor Jackson and Johnny Damon were also considerations for the A's, who were looking for an outfielder capable of hitting left-handers, according to Slusser. GM Billy Beane has traded for Smith and Reddick and re-signed Coco Crisp this offseason to build his 2012 outfield.

The Oakland A's Have Become A Disaster

The Oakland Athletics are currently in talks with free agent outfielder Jonny Gomes. If they sign Gomes, I think will have officially hopped off the Billy Beane bandwagon, because the team's offense right now is an absolute horror show. Assuming Gomes is in the fold, Beane has four outfielders to play the corners alongside Coco Crisp: Gomes, Collin Cowgill, Josh Reddick, and...

Catching Up on MINOR Details: Dayton

If one were to pick which minor league team of the Reds had the best 2011, it would have to be the Single-A affiliate Dayton Dragons. Under manager Delino DeShields (and I love that he's their manager and I don't know why), they finished 83-57, good enough to finish first and win their third division title, and advanced to the quarterfinals of the playoffs. They could...

Catching up on MINOR Details: Billings

Last but not least (with apologies to the AZL Reds) we have the Rookie League Billings Mustangs. They finished 44-32 for the best record overall in the Pioneer League North, but missed out on the playoffs by just one game, because they did not have the best record in either half of the season. They did take it all the way to the last day though. The big news for Billings is that...

Trade Targets: Brandon Allen

The Oakland Athletics are shopping first baseman Brandon Allen, according to Jerry Crasnick, due to their excess number of first base candidates. MLBTR mentions the Pirates as a team that would be a fit for Allen. The connection seems to be based off the fact that the Pirates are looking for a first baseman, but doesn’t suggest that the Athletics have had contact with the Pirates...

ESPN Releases Sunday Night Baseball Schedule

Yesterday ESPN released their Sunday Night Baseball telecast schedule for the first half of the season. The Cincinnati Reds will host a mid-July contest at Great American Ballpark to give fans that rare Sunday game under the lights. It seems as a whole ESPN tried to buck the typical ways of throwing the Yankees, Red Sox, or Cubs on every Sunday Night. This schedule features good...

Reddick honored by Red Sox; excited to join A's

Josh Reddick came back to Massachusetts on Thursday night to be honored as the Red Sox's Rookie of the Year for 2011. In an otherwise comfortable return, the only wrinkle was that Boston is no longer his hometown during baseball season.
