Eliminated from the playoffs doesn't mean anytime off. The independent leagues are becoming a solid resource for MLB franchises to solidify their farm teams until spring training starts. The sting of Juan Uribe's game-winning blast will wear off soon enough, in the meantime, the Braves picked up two solid pitchers from the independent Southern Illinois Miners, according to their October 14 press release. Signed to a minor league contract are Pete Perez (RHP), and Race Parmenter (RHP). Perez, undrafted out of Tartleton State University where he went 5-2 with a 2.43 ERA in 10 starts, appeared in 28 games for the Miners, while starting one. He picked up four wins to go with a solid 3.03 ERA, and his 9.5 SO/9 ranked 7th on the team. Parmenter, also undrafted out of the University of California, Irvine, saved seven games for the Anteaters before signing with the Miners after the completion of his collegiate season. In 20 games, Parmenter saved six games in 20 appearances, but for unfortunate opponents, that's the good news. He fanned 27 batters in 31.2 innings and surrendered only two runs, good for a 0.57 ERA. His WHIP was 0.853 and batters hit a paltry .154. The Braves, always a stellar club with superb pitching, couldn't have looked at a better team for reinforcements. According to the Miners', Perez and Parmenter are the 28th and 29th players to sign a minor league contract with an MLB affiliate, and third and fourth this year (Tyler Stubblefield and Brandon Cunndiff). Manager Mike Pinto extends his thanks to the Braves and others who make these players dreams a reality. "It is an honor and testament to our organization and our coaching staff that the Braves and so many major league affiliates have continued to come to the Miners to add players to their organizations” Devon is the Founder and Executive Director of The GM's Perspective.
