Found June 17, 2013 on Atlanta Bullpen:
It was a good week for Braves Minor League action.  While the team records may not indicate, a few players in the Braves organization had huge weeks at the plate.  Every Braves minor league team is now eliminated from winning the 1st half, except Mississippi.  The M-Braves have one game left in the first half, as they trail the Mobile BayBears by ½ game.  I’ve added the Rome Braves this week and will also add Danville next week as they get started in Rookie ball. Rome Braves (A) (36-30) (4 games back and eliminated from 1st half contention)   4-3 this week The Rome Braves had a good week.  Closer Shae Simmons, 2nd Baseman Levi Hyams, and outfielder Josh Elander will be playing in the South Atlantic League All-Star Game this week.  Rumors are that Rome will be losing all 3 players to Lynchburg in the next few weeks, but that has not been confirmed. This Week’s Top Performer (OF) Josh Elander: 6-25, 2 HR, and 8 RBI’s Season:.321 Avg, 11 HR, and 58 RBI’s Lynchburg Hillcats (Adv. A) (34...

Braves Gattis Disabled Hurt Monday Night Against Mets

Atlanta Braves rookie slugger Evan Gattis has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with an oblique strain.  Gattis sustained the injury on a check swing in the seventh inning Monday night against the Mets. Tuesday morning Gattis told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “It just grabbed me on my right side. I didn’t think I could hit again. Catching, I was loose, warming, and...

Alex Wood Will Make First Major League Start

Atlanta Braves rookie Alex Wood will make his first major league start Tuesday against the New York Mets.  The big lefty with the herky-jerky motion, who was called up to the Braves from Double-A Mississippi on May 30, has pitched 7 2/3 innings in six relief appearances for the big club. Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez made the announcement after Sunday night’s 3-0 win over the...

Upton brothers collide chasing fly ball in outfield

Just when you thought a couple of siblings would have some special connection on the field, the Upton brothers go out and collide tracking a fly ball in the outfield. New York Mets shortstop Omar Quintanilla flied a ball to left center with two outs in the top of the fifth on Tuesday. B.J. Upton, [...]
UPTON HERE, UPTON THERE

B.J. and Justin Upton collide in the outfield

Aside from a hot April where Justin Upton hit .298 with 12 home runs, the Upton brothers have been hot garbage in Hotlanta this season, their first with the Braves.  Justin has seen his average plummet to .247 overall and he has only hit three home runs since April 27. Brother B.J. has been worse, much much worse.  Through 206 at bats, B.J. is hitting an awful .165 with eight home...

Chopcast: Don Sutton talks pitching, Hall of Fame

ATLANTA When Don Sutton was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame back in 1998, he went in as a Los Angeles Dodger. It made sense: he sported the Dodger blue for the majority of his 324 career wins; his career numbers for one of baseball's most distinctive franchises rank right alongside the likes of former teammates Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax. And yet, when mentioned...

Why is Andrelton Simmons hitting leadoff?

Heading into the season, there was much hand-wringing over the fact that the Braves would strike out at an alarmingly brisk pace. So far, they have, racking up 615 Ks, good enough for second most in baseball, behind only the Astros. The flip side of that coin, however, is that they’ve hit 91 home runs, also good for second most in baseball, behind the Orioles. The Braves have ridden...

B.J. and Justin Upton collide hard going for fly ball in outfield

Atlanta Braves outfielders B.J. and Justin Upton violently collided going after a fly ball. Afterwards, it was bro shoves all around.

Braves place Evan Gattis on DL with oblique strain

The Atlanta Braves have placed Evan Gattis on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right oblique, according to Mark Bowman of MLB.com. To replace Gattis on the roster, the Braves recalled infielder Tyler Pastornicky from Triple-A. Gattis was the Braves' catcher for last night's rain-delayed contest against the New York Mets. His injury wasn't revealed until this...

GIF: Upton Brothers collide in outfield on fly ball; B.J. gives Justin playful shove afterward

Tweet   When brothers B.J. and Justin Upton were united on the Atlanta Braves during the offseason many fans had visions like this for what was to come in 2013. Unfortunately, everything isn’t always so perfect as was the case Tuesday against the New York Mets. Thankfully, neither appeared to be hurt on the play. [...]

Three Cuts: Braves walk off again, beat Mets 2-1

ATLANTA -- In a rain-delayed game that stretched well into Tuesday morning, the Braves walked off against the Mets 2-1. Here are three observations from the game: 1. Freddie Freeman is bad news for opposing pitchers Starting pitcher Tim Hudson seemed thoroughly energetic for a 1:30 a.m. interview when discussing his first baseman, Freddie Freeman, who had just knocked a two-run...

Mets Nip Braves 4-3

Matt Harvey pitched no-hit ball for six innings and fanned thirteen batters as the New York Mets held off a late Atlanta at Turner Field to nip the Braves, 4-3. It was just 15 hours after Freddie Freeman’s walk-off homer, that the Braves fell to the Mets in game 1 of Tuesday’s doubleheader. The Braves sent Alex Wood to the mound for his first big league start.  Wood was stellar...

Closer Look at Closers: Aroldis Chapman and Craig Kimbrel

When people talk about young, hard-throwing closers, the first names in their heads are Aroldis Chapman of the Cincinnati Reds, and Craig Kimbrel of the Atlanta Braves. These two have come in over the last couple of years and taken over as two of baseball’s most dominant closers, with Kimbrel taking away the rookie saves record in 2011 away from Texas Rangers closer-turned...

Mets Wheeler Scintillating Against Punchless Braves

The Mets completed a day/night double header sweep with 6-1 victory over the Braves.  The Mets and Braves completed 3 baseball games all within 24 hours, something that does not happen often. The Braves saw 2 pieces of the Mets future today as they saw Matt Harvey in game 1, and Zack Wheeler (1st Start) in game 2.  Both pitchers did not disappoint.  Harvey has been stellar this...
