Major League Baseball announced Friday that Atlanta Braves minor league starting pitcher Darrel Leiva has been suspended 50 games for the use of performance enhancing drugs, Dave O’Brien reports.
The 18-year-old Leiva, who was pitching in the Dominican Summer League, tested positive metabolites of Nandrolone and Stanazolol, two forms of steroids. He has been suspended immediately without pay.
“We agree with and adhere to MLB’s drug policy,” Braves assistant general manager and player development director Bruce Manno said. “Players are aware of the consequences and we support the decision.”
Leiva was suspended along with Philadelphia Phillies minor league pitcher Gabriel Bermudez after testing positive for Stanozolol to bring the year’s total to 68 PED-related suspensions.

BEST OF MAXIM
It is rare indeed for a relief pitcher to capture the Cy Young award. In fact, only nine relievers have accomplished such a feat.
Braves’ closer Craig Kimbrel could be the tenth.
In 43 appearances and 43 innings pitched, Kimbrel boasts a National League-best 1.26 ERA with 31 saves in 33 opportunities. His 0.65 WHIP (walks/hits per innings pitched) is the best in baseball.
In his second start since being traded to the Atlanta Braves, Paul Maholm shut out the Mets on Friday night, allowing just 3 hits and walking none while striking out 5.
Maholm, who had faced the minimum through 5.1 innings, needed just 95 pitches to go the distance for his 4th career shutout. He now has a 3.50 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP on the season, both of which would be career bests...
NEW YORK (AP) -- Chipper Jones says his bed in a New York hotel has caused his back to tighten up, and he has been scratched from the Atlanta Braves' starting lineup against the Mets.
Jones said Friday that his back has gone bad in New York three or four times over his 19-year career yet he hasn't asked to change hotels. He hopes to play Saturday.
The Braves originally...

Paul Maholm pitched a three-hitter in his second start for Atlanta and the Braves got two-run homers from Jason Heyward and Dan Uggla to beat the New York Mets 4-0 Friday night.
Heyward connected in the first inning to help spoil Matt Harvey's home debut with the Mets. Uggla went deep in the eighth off reliever Josh Edgin as Atlanta won for the 13th time in 16 games.

Dan Ugga’s looks to be emerging from a deep and prolonged slump.
The Philadelphia Phillies are no longer the team to beat in the National League East and the Braves know it. They may not need to beat the Phillies, but that hasn’t stopped them from kicking the Phillies while they are down. Monday night’s win against the Phillies was the Braves’ 7th consecutive win against...
NEW YORK -- With nine 100-RBI seasons to his credit, including eight in a row from 1996 through 2003, Chipper Jones knows a budding middle-of-the-order hitter when he sees one. And in teammate Freddie Freeman, Jones sees a player with the talent to take the baton from him as the Atlanta Braves' premier power hitter. Freeman finished with five RBI and hit a mammoth three-run...
NEW YORK -- Atlanta Braves catcher David Ross was a little concerned when starting pitcher Paul Maholm seemed to labor during his pregame bullpen Friday. As it turned out, it was the New York Mets who had plenty to worry about. Maholm continued his red-hot pitching by throwing a three-hit shutout and Jason Heyward and Dan Uggla each hit two-run homers as the Atlanta Braves beat...
Let’s just say that Johan’s first start off the DL was not a successful one. That was one über ugly performance. Johan’s last three starts against the Braves have been just awful. 1 1/3 innings and 8 runs, 5 innings 6 runs, 1 1/3 innings 6 runs (4 earned).
For some unknown reason, ESPN/MLB has decided that this game is so big that it has been moved to an 8pm start. Luckily...
The Mets look to improve off of yesterdays win as the suddenly extremely successful Braves come into town. The Braves have been lurking all season but in the last month they have really turned it on catching the Nationals as they can. Matt Harvey gets the nod tonight as he goes up against Paul Maholm.
Matt Harvey makes his Citi Field debut, and maybe just as important, his National...

Ben Sheets (4-1, 1.41) vs Jonathon Niese (8-6, 3.82)
The Mets and Braves play a prime time game tonight as the Mets try to forget everything about the baseball since the All-Star break. Last night was rough as Santana struggled allowing too many runs in too short of a period of time. Tonight Jon Niese looks to play stopper as he steps up...
It would be an understatement to say the Mets have been disappointing so far in the second half. It’s time to see what’s in store for them this weekend against the Braves.
This is a series between two teams going in completely different directions.
The Braves are playing some of their best baseball of the series, going 12-3 over their last 15 games. What about those Mets? Well...
Having made all three of his starts on the road since getting called up, Matt Harvey is looking forward to making his Citi Field debut.
The 23-year-old rookie, though, appears to have a tough task at hand with the surging Atlanta Braves coming to town.
Coming off their first home win in over a month, the New York Mets try to avoid a sixth consecutive defeat to the Braves as these...
