MLB News: In a move that went under the radar for the most part, the Atlanta Braves signed former San Diego Padres farmhand Erik Hamren to a minor league deal on Friday. In his only season of major league experience, Hamren went 1-0 in 12.1 innings pitched, striking out 10 and walking 9. Posting a 4.38 earned run average he is known for having a rather wild side. Fantasy Ramifications: None. Look at this deal to provide organizational depth. Even if he gets the call to the majors sometime this season, he won’t be an effective fantasy player, even in the deepest of leagues. Braves Pitchers Cracking the WHIP

Braves pitchers have been lights out this season Braves pitching has been outstanding in 2013 and the team ERA (2.19) is a full run less than the next best team in the National League (LA Dodgers 3.26).  ERA is the stat most fans use to measure pitching, but WHIP (walks plus hits divided by innings pitched) is the stat that many baseball experts think gives a better indication of...

Atlanta Braves Sign Nick Weglarz To Minor League Deal

MLB News: On Friday the Atlanta Braves signed outfielder Nick Weglarz to a minor league deal. While it is not known where he will be assigned, we are assuming that it will be Triple-A Gwinnett. The one-time solid prospect who started his career at the age of 17 had fallen out of favor with the Cleveland Indians and was in camp with the Tampa Bay Rays this spring. Once displaying...

Padres scratch Richard from start because of virus

San Diego Padres left-hander Clayton Richard has been scratched from his scheduled start Saturday night against the San Francisco Giants after he came down with a stomach virus. Manager Bud Black says Richard began vomiting after he woke up Saturday morning and has no energy. Andrew Cashner was called upon to make a spot start after serving in long relief. If he is healthy in a...

Padres CEO blames Greinke for brawl

Tom Garfinkel was caught on tape blaming Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke for the brawl between the teams as well as making an insulting remark about Greinke.

Andrew McCutchen bobbles his head while holding his bobblehead (GIF)

On Saturday, April 20, the Pittsburgh Pirates will be giving out an Andrew McCutcheon bobblehead — referred to as “Clutch Bobblehead” in a nod to McCutcheon’s nickname — to the first 25,000 fans through the gates at PNC Park for the team’s game against the Atlanta Braves. The Andrew McCutcheon bobblehead features Rawlings Gold Glove and Louisville Silver Slugger awards...

Hotlanta!

Yes the Braves lost yesterday afternoon to the Royals but it was bound to happen wasn’t it? Teams don’t go on 10 game winning streaks this early in the year. And when it does happen that a team has a 10 game win streak this early, it typically does not include a series sweep of the team picked to win the division ahead of you (Nationals) on the road (Washington). Teams don...

Giants ramping up security for Padres series this weekend after events in Boston

In light of the horrifying events taking place in Boston this week and especially over the last 24 hours, the Giants will be bolstering security efforts for this weekend’s series at AT&T Park against the Padres, beginning Friday night. Here’s a statement the team released (via Bay Area Sports Guy): The Giants will return home to AT&T Park on Friday, April 19th for a...

Padres President, CEO Makes Fun of Zack Greinke’s Battle With Social Anxiety Disorder, Calls Him ‘Rain Man’

Last week’s Dodgers-Padres brawl had serious repercussions for both teams on the injury and suspension fronts, but it’s also the impetus for some potential public relations problems in San Diego. Mitt Romney may have lost the 2012 presidential election for what he said when he thought he was in private company, and it seems Padres president and CEO Tom Garfinkel has made a similar...

Game 15: Braves 6 Pirates 4

For almost the entire night, the Pirates had to play catch up in this game against the Braves. For most of the game, they did just that. BJ Upton lead the game off with a home run, the Pirates tied it on a sac fly. After the Pirates took a 2-1 lead on a long Russell Martin home run, the Braves took a 3-2 lead on a Chris Johnson homer. The Pirates tied the game back up on a moster...

Game 17 Preview: Pirates vs. Braves

Braves (13-3) at Pirates (8-8) 7:05 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT The Bucs go for two in a row against the Braves tonight at PNC. It’s Andrew McCutchen bobblehead night, so there should be a solid crowd (which is good, since there haven’t been any good crowds since the opener). A win would clinch a series split for the Bucs, which would be a very strong result...

Game 15 Preview: Pirates vs. Braves

Braves (12-2) at Pirates (7-7) 7:05 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT The Bucs wrap up this long homestand with a four game set against the hated Braves, who come in to town as the consensus top team in baseball so far this season. Atlanta is at least 2 games better than anyone else in MLB, and won 12 of its first 13 before losing 1-0 to the Royals yesterday. Newly...

Game 16 Preview: Pirates vs. Braves

Braves (13-2) at Pirates (7-8) 7:05 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT  The Bucs look to even this weekend’s series with the red-hot Braves tonight after a tough defeat late in last night’s game. Programming note: This was originally scheduled to be another MLB Network telecast, but the Pens game has been postponed tonight due to the events in Boston. As a...

Padres-Giants Preview

Few starting pitchers have been better than Madison Bumgarner thus far. There may not be one off to a worse start than Edinson Volquez. Those two squaring off appears to give the San Francisco Giants a big edge Friday night at AT&T Park, as might their recent history against the San Diego Padres going into the season series opener between these NL West foes. While the Padres...
