MLB News: On Friday the Atlanta Braves signed outfielder Nick Weglarz to a minor league deal. While it is not known where he will be assigned, we are assuming that it will be Triple-A Gwinnett. The one-time solid prospect who started his career at the age of 17 had fallen out of favor with the Cleveland Indians and was in camp with the Tampa Bay Rays this spring. Once displaying very good power before the age of 20, he now has very few assets to provide a parent club. Fantasy Ramifications: None. Barring a re-connection with his power stroke from years past, while finding a way to stay healthy he probably won’t even get a solid chance in the major leagues. It is too bad though, Weglarz is a pretty cool last name and it would had been fun writing about him more. The Curious Case of Evan Gattis

Thursday’s game for the Atlanta Braves was full of plays that have made up the team’s season almost a month into the game: timely hits, a quality outing from the pitching staff, and balls flying out of the ballpark to help the Braves secure another victory, this one over the Pittsburgh Pirates by the final score of 6-4. Along with home runs from the Uptons and Chris Johnson came...

Cory Gearrin’s plaid suit

Pictures and Video on the FOX 5 website 1. I am so amused this is "news". 2. CG = Cory Gearrin / Cary Grant, right? 3. Glad to know Freddie approves. :D 4. In all seriousness, I think he's pulling it off.  I like it.

Braves Pitchers Cracking the WHIP

Braves pitchers have been lights out this season Braves pitching has been outstanding in 2013 and the team ERA (2.19) is a full run less than the next best team in the National League (LA Dodgers 3.26).  ERA is the stat most fans use to measure pitching, but WHIP (walks plus hits divided by innings pitched) is the stat that many baseball experts think gives a better indication of...

Braves place DeWitt on 15-day DL

The Braves have placed infielder Blake DeWitt on the 15-day disabled list and recalled right-hander David Carpenter from Triple-A Gwinnett. DeWitt has lower back soreness, an injury that limited him to just 48 games last season between the major leagues and minor leagues in the Chicago Cubs' organization. He is 1 for 3 in four games for Atlanta after beginning the season with...

Andrew McCutchen bobbles his head while holding his bobblehead (GIF)

On Saturday, April 20, the Pittsburgh Pirates will be giving out an Andrew McCutcheon bobblehead — referred to as “Clutch Bobblehead” in a nod to McCutcheon’s nickname — to the first 25,000 fans through the gates at PNC Park for the team’s game against the Atlanta Braves. The Andrew McCutcheon bobblehead features Rawlings Gold Glove and Louisville Silver Slugger awards...

Yes the Braves lost yesterday afternoon to the Royals but it was bound to happen wasn’t it? Teams don’t go on 10 game winning streaks this early in the year. And when it does happen that a team has a 10 game win streak this early, it typically does not include a series sweep of the team picked to win the division ahead of you (Nationals) on the road (Washington). Teams don...

Francoeur Impressed with Braves

Jeff Francoeur had a good series against the Braves The Kansas City Royals and former Atlanta Brave, Jeff Francoeur, snapped the Braves 10-game win streak with a 1-0 victory on Wednesday afternoon.  Despite the victory over the Braves, Francoeur came away impressed with this year’s Atlanta  team. “That is a very good baseball team over there, we know that,” Francoeur said...

Bring on the Braves

The Pirates' long homestand concludes with a four-game set against the Braves, who are almost certainly the best team in the early part of the 2013 season. The Braves are currently 12-2 and they've outscored opponents 68-27 (that is, the most runs scored and the fewest allowed) on the season. They're just steamrolling teams pretty much every night. Of course, the...

Game 15: Braves 6 Pirates 4

For almost the entire night, the Pirates had to play catch up in this game against the Braves. For most of the game, they did just that. BJ Upton lead the game off with a home run, the Pirates tied it on a sac fly. After the Pirates took a 2-1 lead on a long Russell Martin home run, the Braves took a 3-2 lead on a Chris Johnson homer. The Pirates tied the game back up on a moster...

Game 15 Preview: Pirates vs. Braves

Braves (12-2) at Pirates (7-7) 7:05 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh Gameday TV: ROOT The Bucs wrap up this long homestand with a four game set against the hated Braves, who come in to town as the consensus top team in baseball so far this season. Atlanta is at least 2 games better than anyone else in MLB, and won 12 of its first 13 before losing 1-0 to the Royals yesterday. Newly...

Game 17 Preview: Pirates vs. Braves

Braves (13-3) at Pirates (8-8) 7:05 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh Gameday TV: ROOT The Bucs go for two in a row against the Braves tonight at PNC. It’s Andrew McCutchen bobblehead night, so there should be a solid crowd (which is good, since there haven’t been any good crowds since the opener). A win would clinch a series split for the Bucs, which would be a very strong result...

Game 16 Preview: Pirates vs. Braves

Braves (13-2) at Pirates (7-8) 7:05 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh Gameday TV: ROOT  The Bucs look to even this weekend’s series with the red-hot Braves tonight after a tough defeat late in last night’s game. Programming note: This was originally scheduled to be another MLB Network telecast, but the Pens game has been postponed tonight due to the events in Boston. As a...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Atlanta Braves – Game 18

I get accused of being negative.  A lot. Right now I’m going to do something a little different because the past two games have really impressed me. The positives. The biggest positive I’m seeing right now is that the Pirates are winning these games completely.  As a fanbase we often say things like, “well sure…
