Austin Kearns‘ time with the Yankees was short and now it’s officially over as he’s signed a one-year deal worth $1.3 million to return to the Cleveland Indians.
The Yankees, in need of a right handed outfielder, traded righty Zach McAllister to Cleveland for Kearns on July 30th last year. Kearn’s time with the Yankees was disappointing though. He provided decent defense, but he was poor at the plate. He hit just .235 with a .668 OPS over 36 games and 102 at bats.
It’s a shame that Kearns had such a poor season last year because the Yankees are still looking for a right handed outfielder and he actually does fit decently. He is a good defender and has a 104 OPS+ over nine seasons in the majors. The reason the Yankees traded for him was because in 84 games with the Indians he had a .272 average and a .772 OPS which is pretty good for a guy coming off the bench.
