Raise the Jolly Roger!:
St. Louis Cardinals
Nearly two months ago, the Cardinals pounded A.J. Burnett for 12 runs at Busch Stadium in a miserable evening for the Pirates. That night still gets mentioned every time Burnett takes the mound, or even when someone discusses his numbers. A.J. won’t make a start in St. Louis this weekend, so tonight the Pirate hitters went out and avenged their fearless new leader with an amazing assault on the Cardinal pitching staff.
The Pirates got out to a quick 2-0 lead on a 2-out single by Neil Walker in the first, but it was hard to imagine that lasting long with Kevin Correia on the mound against a very powerful offense. Indeed, the Cards got a run back in the second, but really went to town in the third with a four-spot. Carlos Beltran tied the game with his 2000th career hit and Pirate-killer Allen Craig blasted a 3-run homer to make the score 5-2.
Obviously, things weren’t looking good for the Bucs at that point. Adam Wainwright settled in and posted three zeroes after the first, but Corr...

Bucs starter A.J. Burnett won his 8th straight start against the Phillies on Thursday. Put simply, he is dominating the mound right now. Burnett is 9-2 this season with a 3.31 ERA and 69 strike outs. Only 5 pitchers in the league have more wins.
After 81.2 innings so far this season, Burnett has given up 72 hits, 29 walks, and 31 runs (30 earned) which results in a WHIP...
A.J. Burnett guided the Pittsburg Prates to a 5-4 triumph over the Phillies yesterday at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. The 35-year-old Burnett, who has gone 9-2 with a 3.31 ERA in 13 starts, managed to become the first Pirates … Continue reading →
A new catcher didn't affect A.J. Burnett's groove.
Burnett threw 6 2-3 sharp innings to win his eighth straight start, Casey McGehee hit a three-run homer and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-4 Thursday.
Pedro Alvarez also went deep for Pittsburgh, which split the four-game set in Philadelphia by winning the last two. The surprising Pirates, seeking...
The Phillies were unable to win this series last night as they fell to the Pirates, 11-7. Although they won the first two games of the series, they are still looking for a series win. In this afternoon's matinée, Kyle Kendrick (2-7, 5.24 ERA) and A.J. Burnett (8-2, 3.24 ERA) will go head to head. Burnett will look to continue his dominance on the mound for a series split while...

The rosters for next week’s All-Star game have been released, and two Pirates are on the list. That’s one more than we usually see before any replacements start coming in — but not not quite as many as we were hoping for this season.
Andrew McCutchen was a lock to make it. It’s pretty sad that he only finished 7th among NL outfielders in fan votes, but I’d have to think...
Through three games, this series at Citizen's Bank Park has not followed a path that the Pirates are likely very likely to be pleased with. Monday's game was a brutal and sloppy mess, Tuesday's game was a winnable one that slipped away, and last night was very nearly an epic disaster. All that being said, with a win today the Pirates escape Philadelphia with a split...
Final: Pirates 5, Phillies 4.
WP: A.J. Burnett (9-2, 3.31 ERA)
LP: Kyle Kendrick (2-8, 5.35 ERA)
SV: Joel Hanrahan (20)
Kyle Kendrick started today for the Phillies, looking to get his team a winning record for the home-stand. Unfortunately, having already given up five runs in the top of the first inning, the Phillies' offense could not retake the lead the rest of the way...
Unfortunately, Rod only played in 2 games this week. One was great, the other not so much. Monday’s 1st-inning injury cut Rod’s week short. Last Friday, June 22, Rod was 2-3 with a run scored. He followed Pedro Alvarez’s leadoff single with a single of his own to center field, and then AJ Burnett came [...]
The Pirates open a three-game series in St. Louis on Friday night. Right-hander Kevin Correia will be on the hill for the Bucs. The Cards will toss right-hander Adam Wainwright.

The Pirates are in St. Louis to finish out this road trip against the Cardinals.
This figures to be an extremely tough series for the Bucs, at least to me. They won’t get to send Burnett or McDonald to the hill (although avoiding Burnett in St. Louis may be a...
