Cubs-baker-throws-out-reds
"Dealin'" Dave Dombrowski looks to be done with the midseason remake of the Detroit Tigers. Sunday's acquisition of Jeff Baker from the Chicago Cubs, for two players to be named by the end of October, seems likely to complete the roster adjustment a contender would hope to make as it readies for the final two months of the regular season. An injury appears to be the only thing that might make Detroit scramble for more help as it tries to catch up with the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central. "If you look at our everyday lineup," Dombrowski said after the acquisition of Baker, "it's pretty well set. Our starters are set, our bullpen's set. "We do have some guys coming off the (disabled list) that may force us to make some moves, but we'll tackle those. "Our bench is set with Baker and Ramon (Santiago) and Gerald Laird and the guys we have in the outfield, so we're pretty well set." The return of Andy Dirks from...

Miracle comeback fitting for Downs first career win

DETROIT It will probably get lost in the excitement of Detroit's improbable win over Cleveland, but one of the best stories in baseball got an even happier ending Sunday afternoon. Darin Downs' teammates noticed, though, as one of them gave him the traditional beer shower that comes with a first major-league victory. "I don't know who it was I had my eyes closed...

Leyland: 130-plus pitches is no problem for Verlander

Why, if Justin Verlander can do it, can't every pitcher throw as many as 130 pitches in a start? And why, if so many pitchers get hurt, doesn't Justin Verlander come up lame? "For me," Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Tuesday when the subject of pitch counts came up, "120 pitches for any pitcher is a piece of cake. But pitch counts are a big thing...

Verlander dominates Yanks, Ks 14

Justin Verlander matched a career high with 14 strikeouts and got home-run support from Prince Fielder and Miguel Cabrera, leading the Detroit Tigers over the New York Yankees 7-2 Monday night. Verlander (12-7) threw 132 pitches, his most in a regular-season game, and sent the Tigers to their fifth straight win. Before this opener of a three-game series, manager Jim Leyland said...

DETROIT (AP) -- Miguel Cabrera's two-run homer capped a stunning five-run rally by Detroit with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning, giving the Tigers a 10-8 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Sunday. Verlander mows down the Yankees with 14 strikeouts

Monday night, Tigers ace Justin Verlander did something that no other Tigers pitcher had done in over 50 years and that’s strike out 14 total Yankee hitters in a single game. The last pitcher to do this was Jim Bunning in 1958 when he too accomplished the same feet. Although he did match a career high with the 14 K’s, Monday’s performance by Verlander is something that Tigers...

Cabrera powers Tigers to sixth straight victory

DETROIT -- Curtis Granderson believes Miguel Cabrera deserves more attention as an American League MVP candidate. The way Cabrera has punished the New York Yankees, it's understandable why Granderson feels that way about his ex-teammate. Cabrera continued his assault on the Yankees' pitching staff with a homer and double Tuesday, driving in three runs in the Detroit Tigers...

Yanks Loss To Detroit May Be A Playoff Premonition

You really couldn't expect Justin Verlander to lose three straight decisions to the New York Yankees. After all, he's Justin Verlander. Verlander broke his losing streak last night, striking out 14 in the process (getting Ichirio 3 times), en route to a 7-2 win over the Yankees. I watched as much of this game as I could before my confidence disappeared and I switched to...
