(Photo Credit: Mike McGinnis/Getty Images) Earl Weaver, the late Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame manager, famously said “The key to winning games is pitching, fundamentals and three-run homers.” When current manager Buck Showalter took over the team on August 2, 2010 his focus was on the fundamentals. The O’s lead the majors in home runs, so they’ll hit their fair share of three-run shots. Today the Orioles focused on pitching and acquired a player who was on their radar for a couple weeks. Baltimore traded minor league infielder Nick Delmonico to the Milwaukee Brewers for right-hander Francisco Rodriguez. Rodriguez, known as “K-Rod” during his dominant years with the then Anaheim Angels, is 1-1 in 2013. He has 10 saves and a 1.09 ERA. In 24.2 innings with the Brewers, Rodriguez has 26 strikeouts and nine walks. “He’s got experience in the postseason and he’s a proven veteran reliever who can pitch late in games,” said Dan Duquette, Orioles executive vice-president of baseball operations. Rodriguez led the American League in saves three times with the Angels (2005, ’06 and ’08). In 2008 he set a new single-season record for most saves in a season with 62, breaking Bobby Thigpen’s record of 57. The trade gives the Orioles more options late in games. Current closer, Jim Johnson, has a MLB best 35 saves. But his 3.55 ERA and six blown saves this season are his highest totals since the 2009 season. Delmonico was a 6th round pick in the 2011 draft. In 60 games at single-A Frederick, Delmonico was batting .244 with 13 home runs and 30 RBIs. The trade comes one day after MLB suspended Brewers star left fielder Ryan Braun for the rest of the season for violations of the Basic Agreement and its Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

Chen's 2 mistakes cost Orioles in 4-3 loss at KC

Two mistakes ruined Wei-Yin Chen's chance of a third straight win since coming off the disabled list. Chen yielded two home runs to Eric Hosmer, and the Kansas City Royals rallied for a 4-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night. Alcides Escobar doubled home the winning run with one out in the ninth inning. Hosmer hit a solo homer on a full-count pitch in the...

Orioles bolster bullpen, add Francisco Rodriguez

Photo Credit: AP While going 0-2 in my men’s league baseball game (considered a success), news of the Baltimore Orioles acquiring RHP Francisco Rodriguez permeated through the bench. My first thought was, a relief pitcher? Then as I stood out in left field, hoping I wouldn’t have to test my depleted arm I thought, a move like this makes the most sense. The Orioles were not going...

Preview: Santana leads Royals against the O's

The Baltimore Orioles are aggressively making changes to get back to the playoffs. The return of Wei-Yin Chen seems to have already bolstered their chances. Baltimore (57-44) holds one...

Francisco Rodriguez traded for Baltimore 3B prospect

The Brewers have traded veteran reliever Francisco Rodriguez to the Baltimore Orioles for third base prospect Nick Delmonico. Several teams had shown interest in Rodriguez, 31, who signed with the Brewers after the season began but eventually became their clsoer. He was 1-1 with a 1.09 ER in 25 games and had converted all 10 of his save opportunities. But, with the team mired in...

O's tally 18 hits, beat Royals for 5th straight win

For the first time this season, the Orioles have won five straight. And, for one of the seemingly few times this year, they won easily. The Orioles had 18 hits equaling a season high, including three from Henry Urrutia, J.J. Hardy and Nick Markakis as they romped over the Kansas City Royals 9-2 at Kauffman Stadium on Monday night. Five Orioles, Nate McLouth, Adam Jones, Chris Davis...

Orioles rumors: More trades to come for Baltimore

Over the weekend it was reported that the Baltimore Orioles were "tapped out" financially after acquiring right-hander Scott Feldman from the Chicago Cubs. Baltimore swung it's second trade of the summer last night -- acquiring Francisco Rodriguez from the Milwaukee Brewers -- and Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports is reporting today that they may not be done making moves...
