Chris Davis belted his 41st moonshot of the season to right field in the 8th inning off of Padres reliever Colt Hynes, after Luke Gregerson allowed base hits to Manny Machado and Adam Jones to begin the inning. The towering homerun broke up a 3-3 tie. Gergerson took the loss to fall to 5-6 on the season. J.J. Hardy also smashed one out of the park for Baltimore (19), his coming in the 2nd inning of Padres starter Eric Stults. O’s starter Miguel Gonzales recovered nicely after getting blasted in his previous two starts. The right-hander from Mexico went six strong innings, the first five of which he held San Diego scoreless. He did run into some trouble in the sixth, when Jedd Gyorko smoked a 3-run homer of his own to straightaway center, his 10th on the year. Gonzales gave way to Francisco Rodriguez in the seventh, who picked up his first win since being traded to Baltimore on July 23rd. Troy Patton and Darren O’Day finished off the game for Baltimore, who badly needed a strong showing after dropping three of their last four series previously. The Birds are still in decent shape as far as their playoff aspirations are concerned, as they are 1 game back of the Texas Rangers as of this writing (they will take on the Angels later tonight). They also are 5.5 games behind Boston in the AL East. The one thing that Baltimore has going for them is a lack of long win streaks this season. They have stayed “medium” practically all season, so you have to think they might suddenly get hot and win 15 of 18, which would be a huge advantage at this point in the season. Baltimore will have an off day Thursday before they travel north to take on the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park. Chris Tillman (14-3) is scheduled to take the mound for the O’s against Ryan Vogelsong (2-4) on Friday.
