The Dan Duquette era in Baltimore has started with a collective yawn among the orange and black clad faithful. Duquette said all the right things in his introductory press conference about building the farm system, increasing the team’s International scouting presence, and generally upgrading the talent level across the organization. Perhaps it’s unfair to judge Duquette’s clearly long range goals after less than two months but the Orioles do have a season to play in a few months and several gaping holes left on an already unspectacular roster.
Baltimore stills needs an everyday third baseman, assuming Mark Reynolds stays at first. The internal options at third are the defensively challenged Chris Davis and 26 year old rookie Matt Antonelli who is a second baseman by trade. Former prospect Josh Bell has been so overmatched in his stints in Baltimore that he shouldn’t be counted on as more than organizati...

Ryan Flaherty could stick with the Orioles
The Baltimore Orioles selected former Cubs first round pick Ryan Flaherty in the Rule 5 draft a few weeks ago. Flaherty has a chance to not only make the Orioles opening day roster but he could be a contributor. Flaherty is a fairly advanced hitter after being drafted out of college and reaching Triple-A last season. The 25 year old was unimpressive in his short Triple-A stint...
Baltimore Orioles should sign Edwin Jackson
Dan Duquette has had an uneventful tenure as the Baltimore Orioles GM. He’s been on the job less than two months but in that time he has done little to improve the on field product. Baltimore had baseball’s worst pitching staff in 2011. Duquette has added only Japanese lefty Tsuyoshi Wada to the team’s starting rotation.
The Orioles are going to need significant...
Baltimore Orioles Bandit Makes Pre-Christmas Withdrawal From BOA
Via the Sun-Sentinel: The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a man who robbed a Wellington bank on Thursday. Officials said a man in a Baltimore Orioles baseball cap walked into a Bank of America on Forest Hill Boulevard around 2:20 p.m. He passed a note to a teller that said he had a gun. Afraid for her life, the teller gave the man the cash from the register...
2011 Ends with a Whimper
2011 is coming to an end. Mercifully.
The Orioles are quiet. Maddeningly.
Of course the Orioles have made some decent depth-building moves. Wada, Endy Chavez, Antonelli; all of them soild moves. But there has been nothing done for Orioles fans to sink their teeth into. There has been nothing done to generate any sort of excitement. Of course, for some, anything short of signing...
Former Oriole Melvin Mora retires
According to several Internet reports former Orioles third baseman Melvin Mora has officially retired from baseball. Mora left the Orioles after the 2009 season following 10 years of distinguished service in Baltimore. Mora played for Colorado in 2010 and began 2011 in Arizona but was released by the Diamondbacks during the season after hitting just .228 in 42 games.
Mora was a...
Could Joe Saunders be headed to the Orioles?
According to The Baltimore Sun the Orioles have interest in free agent pitcher Joe Saunders. Baltimore, who has the Majors worst pitching staff in 2011, has also been linked to Wei-Yin Chen, Edwin Jackson and Jair Jurrjens. Saunders was non-tendered by the Arizona Diamondnbacks after going 12-13 with a 3.9 ERA in 2011.
Saunders has been a reliable innings eater for both the Angels...
Orioles Looking to Upgrade Starting Pitching
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before, but the Baltimore Orioles are looking for starting pitching. This time, Dan Duquette has turned his attention to Joe Saunders and Edwin Jackson. While Jackson is the better pitcher, Saunders would likely cost less to acquire.
Despite putting up medicore strikeout rates, Saunders has done an outstanding job of eating innings and posting...
