The Orioles need to make a move. With the deadline fast approaching, and the Baltimore Oriole’s playoff hopes slowly slipping away, it is time for a deal to get done.

Every rumor involving the AL East squad has fallen by the wayside. With both Manny Machado and Dylan Bundy off the market there is very little Baltimore can offer to sign that big name pitcher. So it seems like a chance at a top tier pitcher is slipping away.

So with Greinke gone and the Cubs pitchers most likely out of reach, who does GM Dan Duquette turn to?

Phillies pitcher Joe Blanton.

The fire sale that is the Phillies is where most teams are looking to, Baltimore included. While most fans were looking for someone a little more high profile, the right handed pitcher is a great piece.

Blanton is a talented pitcher who has been around the block a few times. He isn’t going to be the best pitcher on any team but he can make a difference for a team with playoff aspirations; especially one with as weak a starting rotation as the Orioles.

Despite the recent rise of Chris Tillman, Baltimore is still lacking a full 5 man rotation. Hammel is still out and outside of Chen no one seems to be consistent on the mound. Blanton would be that consistent guy needed to sure up the rotation.

His ERA and win loss record may not be the most impressive but Blanton brings in the one thing this Orioles squad has been lacking, experience.

With the recent loss of Brian Roberts, there are no real veterans on the team who can take the reins when times are tough. Blanton can be that guy.

He has seen both sides of the coin. He has been on teams that sucked, and on World Series winning teams. He can lead Baltimore through the harder stretches of the season and push them over the top.

While Blanton would in no way guarantee a playoff appearance, he would be a great help. The Orioles have not made any meaningful moves this trade season. The only two acquisitions worth noting are Jim Thome and Omar Quintalla, two players who won’t make a meaningful impact on the team.

Will Blanton push the Orioles into the playoffs? Probably not, but with less than 24 hours left a move needs to be made.

Dan Duquette has been quite successful in his career with the Orioles. Let’s hope his next move can keep up that trend.
