The Baltimore Orioles acquired Scott Feldman from the Chicago Cubs on July 2, since Aug. 3 Feldman has been one of the O’s best starting pitchers. (Photo credit: Greg Fiume/Getty Images)   The Baltimore Orioles have not been playing particularly well lately — they’re 4-6 in their last 10 games and have lost three straight to the New York Yankees. The Orioles are currently on the outside looking in when it comes to the postseason, virtually eliminated from the American League East race as they trail the Boston Red Sox by 11 games with 17 left in the regular season. If the Orioles are to make the postseason it would likely be as one of the AL Wild Card teams, they trail the Tampa Bay Rays by 2.5 games for the second Wild Card spot. Back in early July, the O’s acquired Scott Feldman from the Chicago Cubs in hopes that he could bring stability to an at-times shaky starting rotation. In five starts in July Feldman was 2-2 with a 5.12 ERA, but once the calendar turned over to August he really began to find his form. After allowing five runs against the Seattle Mariners on Aug. 3, Feldman, a towering hurler at six-foot seven-inches, has since yet to allow more than three runs in a start — in his last three starts he is 1-1 with a 1.52 ERA, including a complete game shutout against the Chicago White Sox on Sept. 6. In his last 10 starts Feldman has a 5-3 record with a 3.02 ERA. In those starts Feldman has averaged nearly five hits allowed, with an average of two walks and five strikeouts. For the season, the 30-year-old Feldman is 12-10 with a 3.54 ERA. Opponents are batting .229 against him and he has a WHIP of 1.13. Feldman was signed to a one-year, $7 million contract by the Cubs and when it expires at the end of the season, he will become a free agent. But considering the O’s traded starter Jake Arrieta and reliever Pedro Strop along with two international signing bonus slots for him, the Orioles will probably try and re-sign him. Feldman’s next start should come in the first game of a three-game series against the AL East-leading Red Sox on Tuesday at Fenway Park.
