The Baltimore Orioles have again dipped into the Independent League talent pool and signed a solid player to a minor league deal.   El Paso Diablos catcher Zane Chavez will report to Spring Training in March according to Our Sports Central.  Chavez has spent a significant amount of time in Indy Ball, playing over 200 games since 2009, yet 2012 was the first time since his rookie year that he got an extended amount of at-bats.  He spent time between the Grand Prairie AirHogs and El Paso Diablos playing in 70 games. He legged out 23 doubles, and drove in 51 runs. In 263 at-bats Chavez batted .339 with a .373 OBP and .498 SLG. What really stands out is the Chavez has thrown out 56 of a potential 106 base stealers (34%) in his career.  For those following the Indy signings, the Orioles have been very active this off-season.  The American Association said the upstart Orioles have signed a total of six players from their league this off-season including, RHP Kyle Mertins who was rated by Baseball America as the 19th rated Independent Prospect in their year end review. Shortly thereafter, they signed LHP David Quinowski.  “Chavez is the sixth American Association player purchased by the Orioles organization this off-season; Baltimore also signed Lincoln LHP David Quinowski, Sioux Falls RHP Kyle Mertins, Fargo-Moorhead OF Buddy Sosnoskie, El Paso RHP Martin Prado, and Amarillo RHP Chase Johnson.”  You just never know when you will meet expectations of those around or when you’ll be at the right place at the right time.  Regardless, Chavez has put in his time, and all that hard work has finally paid off.
