Beyond their ever-growing disabled list, the Milwaukee Brewers are operating with a handful of players who are not 100 percent physically.

Third baseman Aramis Ramirez missed his second consecutive game Sunday with a bruised left elbow, the result of being hit by a pitch Friday night. And manager Ron Roenicke revealed that first baseman Travis Ishikawa was unavailable due to an oblique strain, and the team placed Ishikawa on the disabled list after a 4-3 loss to Arizona.

"We're banged up," Roenicke conceded. "We've been going with a short bench."

Roenicke also said that outfielder Carlos Gomez has not been running at full speed since returning a week ago from a DL stint caused by a hamstring strain. Gomez has been playing but has been cautious not to re-injure the hamstring.

Roenicke said he hoped Ramirez would return to the lineup Monday for the series opener against the Dodgers in Los Angeles. In the meantime, he had to scramble to put together a lineup in the series finale against Arizona.

"I've never had so many days in a row where you're fighting with who to put in the lineup," Roenicke said. "It has been (difficult)."

The situation was much different last season, in Roenicke's first year as the Brewers manager. His lineup was stable for the most part, with few changes of note.

"Last year was really easy, with the platoon system in center that worked so well (with Nyjer Morgan and Gomez)," he said. "It was really easy to write out a lineup. The thoughts were when somebody was a little banged up, he needs a day off. Other than that, it was the same.

"It's so nice to come in knowing you have those same guys that are going to be there every day, in that same order. And they were all doing well; they all were producing."

Brooks Conrad was recalled from Troiple-A Nashville to take Ishikawa's roster spot. had been optioned to the minors May 20 after going 0-for-21 in 13 games with Milwaukee.
