One of the most awaited verdicts in the sports world came down this afternoon.
Former San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds– facing federal purjury charges in regards to a 2003 grand jury investigation into the BALCO cooperative– has been sentenced to two years of probation, 30 days of house arrest, 250 hours of community service and a $4,000 fine.
As of yet, Bonds has not been handed any jail time, but this could change given prosectuors’ requests of up to 15 monts in jail for the perjury charge. Today, the jury found Bonds guilty of one charge of obstruction of justice.
Evidently, judge Susan Alston chose to go along with the sentence suggested by Bonds’ probation officer of house arrest, probation, a fine and community service instead of the 15-21 months in jail previously suggested by the prosecution, but this does not yet mean that jail time couldn’t be forthcoming in future proceedings.
Barry Bonds’ reputation is permanently damaged regardless of how this case finally turns out– and along with it, the belief among baseball fans that any significant accomplishment can be reached without the “help” of performance-enhancing drugs or cheating.
