Fox Sports Arizona:
PHOENIX Trevor Bauer might return to the Diamondbacks this season and Willie Bloomquist might not, although nothing is definitive in either case.
Bauer made his final minor league start for Reno in the Triple-A championship game against Pawtucket on Tuesday, and the D-backs were interested enough that general manager Kevin Towers caught a red-eye flight to the East Coast to attend the game at Durham, N.C.
Bauer scuffled in his time with the D-backs this season, going 1-2 with a 6.06 ERA in four starts between June 28-July 17 butwas outstanding in the minors, going 12-2 with a 2.42 ERA in the regular season and winning his first two postseason starts.
I think we kind of feel it would be beneficial for him to come back, D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said.
Things didnt go as planned the first time Bauer was in the majors, Gibson said. I think of Bryan Shaw. Patrick Corbin. They go down and get to work on some things, and they come back. Its usually beneficial. Were not only thinking of this year but next year. It probably makes sense that any kind of experience or exposure that he gets back here and segues into the environment would be good for him.The D-backs have given their starters plenty of rest with four off days in the last 13 and do not appear to be concerned about their innings their young pitchers have logged. At the same time, If we feel somebody should miss a start, then he would be a likely choice if he was here, Gibson said.
Bloomquist does not want to be shut down for the rest of the year, but that might be the wisest course, since he has done no baseball activity in the last two weeks. At the same time, doctors have told him that the lower back pain stiffness that has sidelined him except for one at-bat since Aug. 8 is not a long-term issue andwill heal in time.
Its very tough for me to say those words, Bloomquist said about not playing the rest of the year. Well see what the situation is at the point in time when I am ready to play again. It is tough for me to sit here say Im done for the year if we have games left.
Bloomquist is hitting .302 with 21 doubles in 80 games, and he is hitting .435 with runners in scoring position, which would lead the league if he had enough at-bats to qualify. Since his last start Aug. 8, the D-backs are three games under .500. Bloomquist reported he is feeling better, and he was to begin a more intensive rehab program Tuesday.
We miss him. He had a great year for us when he was healthy, Gibson said.
Were not going to just shut him down. Hes going to see it through, and hopefully he can get back into regular baseball activities. If he doesnt, we are not going to push it so he goes backward.
Bloomquist learned Tuesday that he is the D-backs nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award, given annually to player considered to best represent the game through positive contributions on and off the field. Bloomquist is active with Phoenix Children's Hospital.
Its obviously a huge honor. Really humbled about it. There are people who do a lot more in the community than I do, Bloomquist said. Follow Jack Magruder on Twitter

PHOENIX It is only a small stretch to believe that we might have seen Chris Young's last start in a Diamondbacks home uniform Tuesday.
It is far from a certainty, of course, but it cannot be ignored.
When Young was forced to leave the D-backs' 3-2 victory over San Diego after aggravating his right quadriceps injury two pitches into the game Tuesday, the possibility hung...
The Arizona Diamondbacks have recalled outfielder A.J. Pollock and selected the contract of infielder Mike Jacobs from Triple-A Reno.
The team also designated outfielder Cole Gillespie for assignment.
The moves came one day after Reno defeated Pawtucket for the Triple-A championship.
Pollock batted .318 with 52 RBIs and 21 stolen bases for Reno. He appeared in 22 games in stints...
PHOENIX Disruptor, OK.
Diamondbacks leadoff hitter Adam Eaton embraces any descriptor in the thorn-in-the side family.
"That's a compliment to me. Being a pest. Being annoying. Being a dirt bag. Any of those is fine with me. I just try to get on base, score runs. Anything. It doesn't matter," Eaton said.
Eaton reached base for the 11th time...
The Arizona Diamondbacks may have lost their center fielder again. Chris Young, after battling a hamstring injury almost all season long, left after the first play in the top of the first inning last night. He was tracking down a long fly ball out off the bat of the San Diego Padres' Everth Cabrera when he seemed to pull up with pain in his leg. He exited the...
The Arizona Diamondbacks' struggles with the San Diego Padres this season have proved costly, but they're hoping it's not too late to turn things around.
After a rare win over San Diego in this series opener, the Diamondbacks will go for their third straight victory Wednesday night when they continue this three-game set at Chase Field.
Arizona (73-74) had lost eight...
Champagne was not the only wet stuff Mike Jacobs rubbed from his eyes Tuesday. Jacobs was overcome with emotion when he was told in a meeting with Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers, Class AAA Reno manager Brett Butler and D-backs director of player development Mike Bell after Reno's 10-3 victory over Pawtucket in the Triple-A championship game that he was being...
Ian Kennedy gave up one run in eight innings for his 14th victory, Miguel Montero drove in two runs with two doubles and the Arizona Diamondbacks finally got a home win over the San Diego Padres, 3-2 on Tuesday night.
San Diego was 6-0 in Arizona this season before dropping the series opener.
Kennedy (14-11) overcame a 30-pitch first inning, scattering seven hits. A 21-game winner...
Adam Eaton tripled to spark a three-run fifth inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks rallied to beat the San Diego Padres 6-2 on Wednesday night.
Dan Wheeler had an RBI triple, and Miguel Montero and Paul Goldschmidt added run-scoring doubles for the Diamondbacks, who have won three straight. Arizona remained 4 1-2 games behind St. Louis for the second NL wild card.
Reaching the postseason is largely out of their control, but the Arizona Diamondbacks have a good chance to move above .500 for the first time in nearly a month with a sweep of their pesky division rival.
The Diamondbacks will go for their fourth straight win Thursday night and hand the Padres' Clayton Richard his first loss against them.
Arizona has won eight of 12, but is...
With the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres on the fringe of the playoff race, it's safe to say one of these teams will no longer be there when this three-game series concludes.
The visiting Padres are further back in the hunt for the second wild-card spot in the NL, but they may have a good chance to make up some ground starting Tuesday night considering their recent...
Tonight's Phillies and Mets game at Citi Field has been postponed due to weather. The game will be made up on Thursday night.
