Josh Beckett took the mound for the Sox and they hoped to build upon the walk off of the night before.  Unfortunately, Beckett continued his first inning struggles and then some and the offense couldn't save him this time.

Beckett gave up two runs in the first inning even if one of them was scored by umpire error.  With one out, Beckett gave up a triple to Rasmus and then he came home and Middlebrooks made a great throw to Shoppach.  The umpire called Rasmus safe, however the replay showed he was clearly out.  Shoppach complained.  Bobby V came out and complained.  Run still counts.  Sox 0-1.  Beckett then gave up a second run on an RBI single to Arencibia.  Sox 0-2.  Beckett ERA in the first inning this season is well over 10.  No bueno Josh.  Beckett gave up 2 more runs in the 2nd inning with an RBI double to Rasmus to score Escolbar and Gose.  Sox 0-4.  Beckett gave up his 5th and final run in the 5th inning with an RBI single from Lind.  The run was unearned since Encarnacion only got on base to begin with because of a throwing error by Middlebrooks.  Sox 0-5 none the less.  Beckett pitched 6 innings, however it just wasn't good enough.  Beckett needs to figure some stuff out and soon.  Beckett's line for the night was 96 pitches, 6 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 7 Ks.

Andrew Miller came out in the 7th and pitched himself an impression 1-2-3 inning.  Mark Melancon came out in the 8th and pitched a scoreless 8th.  Melancon find himself in a little bit of trouble in the 9th.  Melancon gave up 2 doubles in a row including an RBI double and then issued a walk.  Bobby V came out to get Melancon and Tazawa was in the game.  Tazawa got Rasmus to line into a double play to end the inning.

There isn't much to say in terms of the Red Sox offense tonight.  Laffey once again seemed to have the Red Sox's number.  Laffey pitched 7 scoreless innings and seemed to make easy work of the Sox offense.  The only run the Sox could get would come in the 9th inning when they got a single, lonely run off of Janssen.   The Red Sox had runners at the corners and only one out.  Mike Aviles was at the plate and hit a grounder to short and it was *this close* to being a game ending double play, but Aviles beat out the throw and Middlebrooks came in to score from third.  Sox at least got one run on the night.  Salty came out to pinch hit and there would be no heroics tonight and he K'ed to end the game.

Red Sox 1 Blue Jays 6 BOXSCORE
