Found March 05, 2012 on The Outside Corner:
Here's something you don't see every day when combing the MLB headlines: Swarm of bees delays start of game between Giants, D-backs. According to the AP recap on ESPN, with one out in the second inning, these bees congregated in right field and started to make their way toward the Giants dugout. Unlike bee delays in the past -- yes, this has happened before -- no stinkin' apiarist was needed: The grounds crew came up with a sweet solution. They smeared a combination of concession-stand lemonade and cotton candy on two utility carts and lured many of the bees away from fans and players. Some of the bees, however, found a perch on a television camera. Chris Young apparently sprinted in from center field when he first noticed the swarm, hopefully screaming "not the bees!" Interestingly, this is the second straight game the Giants have had to endure a bizarre situation -- on Saturday they had to evacuate their facility due to a gas leak. [follow]

Improved health is Saunders' chief concern

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Diamondbacks starter Joe Saunders made his first start of the spring Tuesday at Salt River Fields, and though the results left something to be desired, he felt much better than this time a year ago. Saunders threw 35 pitches over two innings of work against the Texas Rangers, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk in the 16-3 D-backs loss. Former D-back Conor...

The Men Who Weren’t Buster

On May 25, 2011, I left work just after 5 pm, like usual. I walked a few blocks to the gym, did my workout, showered, and came home. I got home just after 8, and ate my dinner while I turned on the night’s Giants game. I had DVRed the game, and started watching on delay. As usual, I skipped through commercials, doing my best to avoid Facebook, Twitter, and all other social media...

Swarm of bees delays Giants-Diamondbacks game

The Diamondbacks' field crew used a combination of cotton candy and lemonade to help disperse a swarm of bees that delayed the San Francisco Giants split squad's 11-1 win over Arizona for 41 minutes in the second inning Sunday. Ian Kennedy's first spring training outing was cut short because of the delay with one out in the second. He threw 29 pitches and allowed one...

Brian Wilson to Open a Bowling Alley?

Remember last year at this time when it seemed like around every corner lurked a new and different endorsement deal involving Brian Wilson?Of course you do.Thankfully, for some, it hasn't ended. Apparently, the San Francisco Giants closer is partnering with Lucky Strike to open up a bowling alley across the street from AT&T Park. And becuase the future failed business venture...

Giants 11, Diamondbacks 1

One of the main reasons Major League Baseball holds spring training in Arizona and Florida is because of the sunny weather. Very rarely are there rain storms in the Arizona desert this time of year, which makes for a perfectly-uninterrupted exhibition season. Almost. Nobody accounted for an “insect delay.” With the Arizona Diamondbacks-San Francisco Giants Cactus League game...

Fortified Melk

There are a few ways to ponder Melky Cabrera. There’s Cabrera in the context of how he was acquired: i.e. the Giants traded Jonathan Sanchez. There’s Cabrera in the context of how he impacts the Giants — in pure terms of how much better they’ll perform with Melky, as opposed to how they’d do without him. And then there’s the simple one: Melky Cabrera, free of context...

Diamondbacks Game Delayed Because of Bees

Nominally when you hear that there is a lot of buzz surrounding a baseball team it's because of their good play on the field but that is not the case with the Arizona Diamondbacks (who share a complex in Arizona with the Colorado Rockies.) Sunday's spring training contest against the Giants was delayed in the second inning for 41 minutes because of bees. "I was not...

Brewers 7, Giants 3

San Francisco pitcher Matt Cain looked sharp in his Cactus League debut, but it was the Milwaukee Brewers who came away with a win 7-3 tonight at Scottsdale Stadium. [box score] Cain pitched two solid innings, allowing just two hits and a walk. He tossed 32 pitches. Pinch hitter Zelous Wheeler blasted a three-run homer off Jeremy Affeldt and former Giant Travis Ishikawa added a solo...

Rockies 6, Diamondbacks 5

Gerardo Parra led off the game with a double and later hit a solo home run in the Arizona Diamondbacks' 6-5 loss to the Colorado Rockies in a sloppy, early-spring game Monday. Parra, a Gold Glove winner in 2011, is now the fourth outfielder for Arizona behind newcomer Jason Kubel. Parra homered off Jhoulys Chacin. The Rockies won in the bottom of the ninth when Ben Paulsen...

Giants 1, Brewers 1

The San Francisco Giants and Milwaukee Brewers played to a 1-1 tie Sunday at Maryvale Stadium in Phoenix. Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun, in his first action since his 50-game drug-related suspension was reversed, struck out in his only two at bats. He was given a standing ovation from the Brewers crowd when he was first announced. But about half the crowd of 6,500 or so were Giants...
