Reading Between The Seams:
credit photo to sports.yahoo.com One of the most exciting plays you will ever see is in baseball is the double steal. Especially when one of the base stolen is home. That is what St. Louis Cardinals right-fielder, Carlos Beltran, succeeded to do in the third inning of the Miami/St. Louis game today. It all started when Matt Holliday attempted to steal second base with Beltran already hovering over at third. Miami Marlins catcher, Jeff Mathis, threw to second without hesitant to get Holliday out but Matt stopped and was involved in a run down. The Marlins didn’t consider Beltran, who has over 300 lifetime stolen bases in the majors, a threat to take off. Watch the savvy base-running by Matt Holliday that allowed Beltran to steal home. courtesy of mlb.com Every run counts in baseball as that stolen base was the difference in today’s game. Cardinals squeaked by the Marlins 3-2. For the first time in the last few weeks, the “Fab Five” has another team besides the St. Louis Cardinals occupying the number one spot in our rankings. Still a likely playoff contender, the Cardinals look to be headed for an intriguing battle to decide the National League Central division
Michael Vine noticed something on the pitcher's mound at Busch Stadium. (He snapped the pic below, apparently from his TV.) So, Vine wrote a letter to the editor of the local paper: Derrick... Full story at Bob's Blitz ~ http://www.bobsblitz.com
MIAMI Jose Fernandez understands why the Miami Marlins are monitoring his innings total.
The kid with the golden arm, after just 138 13 minor-league innings, will be limited to 150-170 during his rookie season.
Fernandez is at 98 23 heading into his final start before the All-Star Game, scheduled for Saturday night against Washington.
Still, Fernandez said Monday he would be...
In light of St. Louis media members highlighting the offensive and defensive struggles of Jon Jay so far this season, I decided to write a piece on the top five center fielders in the history of the St. Louis Cardinals.
A quick disclaimer: The top five list is strictly my opinion. It is based on statistics for the players that played before my time and my personal evaluation of players...
Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina was sent for medical tests for a knee injury and did not play Saturday against the Marlins, but before leaving told teammates he didn't believe it was anything serious.
Pitcher Adam Wainwright said Molina told him he'd probably be OK with a little rest and that the tests were ''purely precautionary.'' Molina has been among...
The Baby Birds finished with a 5-2 record on Monday. Peoria, Palm Beach, State College, Johnson City, and the GCL Cards were all winners while Memphis and Springfield took the only 2 losses.
In the upper minors, Boone Whiting made it through 5 innings for the first time in 4 starts but still took the loss as the Memphis bats were silent. Jake Lemmerman hit a 3-run home run and Stephen...
(via CardinalsFarm.com) It was a very successful night for the Baby Birds as the Cardinal affiliates went 6-1 prior to the result of the Palm Beach game which was not known at the time of publication. Memphis, Springfield, Peoria, State College, Johnson City, and the GCL Cards all won. The GCL Cards also lost the second game of a double-header.
In the upper minors, Nick Additon of...
The St. Louis Cardinals are unsure whether Yadier Molina will be available Sunday as they try for their first three-game home sweep of the Miami Marlins in 13 years.
They could like their chances either way since starter Lance Lynn has won nine straight regular-season decisions at Busch Stadium although he pitched poorly earlier this year against Miami.
Lynn (10-3, 3.75 ERA) may...
Lance Lynn outpitched Marlins All-Star Jose Fernandez for his 11th win and Matt Holliday homered for the St. Louis Cardinals in a 3-2 victory that wrapped up a three-game sweep Sunday.
Lynn (11-3) worked seven strong innings in 87-degree heat and matched All-Star Adam Wainwright for the team lead in wins, bouncing back from losses in consecutive starts for the first time in his...
The success of the St. Louis Cardinals largely can be attributed to the contributions of Yadier Molina and Adam Wainwright, two of the team's five selections to the NL All-Star squad.
Molina could return to the lineup after receiving positive news regarding his injury, and Wainwright will start one day earlier than scheduled as St. Louis hosts the Houston Astros on Tuesday night...
With the minor league season hitting its half way point in mid-June, our July top 20 prospect list has not changed much this month. We lost Seth Maness and Kevin Siegrist from the top 20 due to extended major league playing time. Maness falls out of the top 10 and Anthony Garcia, who was our June Player of the Month, re-enters the top 10 at #9. The top 8 from June stay the same....
It might be the most prestigious tennis tournament at the world, but even the hallowed grounds of Wimbledon aren't off-limits to Cardinal Nation.
Kudos to this man (shown several times on ESPN) rocking his New Era authentic head top.
A couple of points:
1) Now that I'm looking at this, I'm pretty sure he isn't picking his nose and that it's just...
The Miami Marlins were recently swept in St. Louis losing the final two games of the three-game series by a run each. Overall, Miami had a 2-4 road trip and will return home to conclude the first half of the season with a six-game homestand. The Marlins open that homestand with an Atlanta Braves team [...]
The Miami Marlins didn't hit many home runs during their dismal hitting-challenged start to the season, but a recent power surge has them playing better.
That could spell trouble for the Atlanta Braves' Mike Minor, who has been susceptible to giving up homers in his recent starts.
After being cooled off with their first three-game losing streak in a month, the Marlins try...
