Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson doesn't believe in the notion that a team with a big lead should ease off the gas pedal. The Chicago Cubs beg to differ. Therein lies the reason for two near brawls Thursday night in the Nationals' 9-2 rout of the Cubs, which completed a four-game sweep. First, Cubs bench coach Jamie Quirk began yelling at Nationals third base coach Bo Porter, whose team continued to play aggressively despite its big lead. Quirk was ejected. In the bottom of the sixth, rookie reliever Lendy Castillo threw inside to Nats rookie Bryce Harper, prompting the benches to empty. Catcher Steve Clevenger was tossed, as was reliever Manny Corpas, who had run in from the bullpen with his teammates. "You're up 7-2 and Lendy Castillo is pitching," Clevenger said about what started the whole mess in the fifth. "It's 3-0. You don't swing 3-0 in that situation. But, you know, things happen." Johnson said, "I was prou...

Jamie Quirk should be fired, Steve Clevenger should be optioned off the team

I've only read the accounts of what happened last night, but that probably is best. Based on what has been said since the events of last night's Cubs @ Walgreens game, Jamie Quirk should be fired immediately and Steve Clevenger should be optioned off the team. The actions by both were ridiculous. Ever since Lou left this team has been a bunch of crybabies. Last year we had...

Here's Bo Porter screaming at Jamie Quirk, and vice versa

Nothing like a benches clearing incident started by a bench coach screaming at a third base coach. And so, there they were: Bo Porter standing on the top step of the Cubs dugout, screaming at Jamie Quirk. The smart money is on Bo in that fight. And then the bullpens/dugouts empty! Everybody mill about!

Cubs' Clevenger suspended one game

Chicago Cubs catcher Steve Clevenger has been suspended for one game by Major League Baseball for his role in a benches-clearing incident against the Nationals. Clevenger, who also was fined, did not appeal the penalty and was set to sit out Saturday night at Pittsburgh. During the sixth inning of the Cubs' 9-2 loss to Washington on Thursday night, a pitch from Chicago'...

Benches clear twice during Nats-Cubs game

In Thursday's Cubs-Nationals game, benches cleared in the sixth inning after Cubs reliever Lendy Castillo threw inside at Bryce Harper. Both benches cleared and the bullpens emptied onto the field. There was an incident at first base between Cubs reliever Manuel Corpas and Nationals reliever Mike Gonzalez led to both of their ejections, and Cubs catcher Steve Clevenger was...

Potential bench-clearing brawl between Nationals and Cubs turned into a bench-clearing shoving match

Benches cleared after Cubs pitcher Lendy Castillo threw inside on Bryce Harper. But once teams gathered on the diamond, all they were able to muster was a little yapping and shoving. Things seemed to have calmed down when more yapping and shoving broke out at first base. Meanwhile Nationals announcers are going on and on about the Cubs “throwing at a teenager” and wondering...

Cubs/Nationals have bench-clearing brawl without the brawl part (Video)

Back on Thursday night, things got heated between the Washington Nationals and Chicago Cubs in the 6th inning when Cubs pitcher Lendy Castillo nearly hit Nationals star Bryce Harper with a pitch. Harper who was not too pleased with the location of the ball went out to confront Castillo but before that happened, both teams cleared the benches for what would appear to be a brawl...

Other ‘Unwritten Rules’ the Cubs Believe

As you’re aware, there was little dust-up between the Nats and Cubs on Thursday night after Chicago tried to bean Bryce Harper. Back-up catcher Steve Clevenger explained why after the game: “You’re up 7-2 … you don’t swing 3-0 in that situation.” Mind you, this occurred in the FIFTH INNING. Clevenger’s ridiculously stupid notion got us thinking about what other “unwritten...

Cubs and Nats scuffle after inside pitch to Harper

Cubs catcher Steve Clevenger is among four people ejected when benches cleared twice in two innings of the game between Chicago and the Washington Nationals. Clevenger, Cubs right-hander Manuel Corpas and Nationals lefty Michael Gonzalez - both pitchers not in the game - were ejected in the bottom of the sixth Thursday night after Chicago righty Lendy Castillo brushed back Bryce...

Here's what the Nats-Cubs benches-clearing scuffle looked like on TV

So after the first benches clearing incident of the night involving Bo Porter and Jamie Quirk Thursday night, the Cubs immediately threw at (who else?) Bryce Harper in the fifth inning. Fortunately, Jayson Werth and Ryan Zimmerman stepped in to protect Harper from himself. And then things got ******* crazy, with Michael Morse and Edwin Jackson in particular...

Video: Nationals and Cubs bench clearing brawl

"If they want to quit competing and forfeit, that's fine, but we're gonna keep competing." (Davey Johnson on the Cubs, via MASN/postgame interview, 9/6/2012) Up above, video (via MLB.com) of the 6th inning benches-clearing incident between the Nats and Cubs. Nationals, Cubs Benches Clear Twice in Anticlimactic Fashion as Tempers Flare (Video)

The Washington Nationals have been making headlines all season with their play but on Wednesday the story was not their 9-2 win over the lowly Chicago Cubs, but the two flare ups between the teams that led to not one, but two bench-clearing "brawls." The first of the two altecations came in the fifth inning when Nationals third base coach Bo Porter and Cubs bench coach...

Nationals sweep Cubs, benches clear twice

The Washington Nationals pounded the Chicago Cubs 9-2 as two bench-clearing incidents occurred Thursday night at Nationals Park. After being down 2-1 in an inning and a half, Nationals Right-hander Jordan Zimmmermann (10-8) retired 14 of the next 16 batters he faced.  He lasted seven innings allowing only two runs on two hits, striking out nine batters and walking one.   ...

Nats-Cubs Brawl! (LAME VIDEO)

Your browser does not support iframes. You’ve no doubt heard that the Nats and Cubs got into it at Nats Park tonight, probably because the Nats have been beating the bloody hell out of the Cubs (31-9 in the series sweep). Anyway, here’s the video. Nothing special, but this sort of thing is always fun, even if Bob Carpenter tries his best to ruin it (e.g., “And now the Cubs...

Tempers flare in Nats' win over Cubs

Adam LaRoche added to his home run tear with a two-run shot and the Washington Nationals beat the Chicago Cubs 9-2 in a fight-filled game Thursday night to finish a lopsided four-game sweep. The trouble started with a testy exchange between Cubs bench coach Jamie Quirk and Nationals third base coach Bo Porter in the fifth inning. Quirk shouted from the dugout toward third base and...
