DENVER — Maybe it’s the cold medicine. But the doses have me thinking in numbers. So here’s a few to digest as an appetizer before dinner. As reported last week, closer Rafael Betancourt — yes that’s his role, closer, closer, closer for all asking on Twitter (I kid because I care) — officially signed his contract extension today. He will make $4 million this year, the Rockies picked up the 2013 mutual option at $4.25 and added an option for 2014 for $4.25 million. Betancourt, 36, inherited the closer’s spot from an injured Huston Street in August and converted eight of nine save opportunities. He held opponents to a .203 batting average last season, and .077 mark (5-for-65) over the final two months. He has never opened the season as a closer. Given his age, he might not work three consecutive days much, especially early in the year. That could provide some opportunities for Rex Brothers, Matt Belisle and Matt Lindstrom.
