HOUSTON It seems like a lot to put on a ballplayer, asking him to mean something to a dying stranger.
Craig Biggio is neither priest nor pastor, neither surgeon nor psychiatrist. He is man who got 3,000 hits, all for the Houston Astros. Which is to say he is a hero, even if he'd rather not think of it that way.
"As far as being somebody's hero," he said, "that's a nice compliment."
On Saturday night at Minute Maid Park in Houston, the broadcast crew at FOX Sports Houston solicited for nominations for the Fan of the Game, and ended up choosing Tom O'Brien. Basically, you get on the broadcast, there's a short interview and that's that. When it was over, the host asked O'Brien if there was anything else she could do for him.
O'Brien, 21, has Hodgkin's lymphoma. He knows he is going to die sometime this summer.
He wanted to meet Craig Biggio.
