It seems that Toronto views Solarte as the super utilityman. Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports

This isn’t a move that’s going to set the league ablaze, but the Toronto Blue Jays and San Diego Padres made a trade Saturday afternoon. In it, the Blue Jays get Yangervis Solarte. But that’s not what makes this interesting. What makes this interesting are the potential moves that come next. As for Solarte, what do the Blue Jays expect from him?

We see him playing on a very regular basis,” Jays GM Ross Atkins would say. And it could be everywhere.

Whether that be spelling second base, spelling shortstop, from time-to-time at third, he can play first, he’s been in the outfield before – it’s really just about versatility.

But which version of Solarte shows up will be the difference-maker. Back in 2016, he would slash .286/.341/.467 with 26 doubles and 15 dingers over 109 games. And while he would play in 19 more games while slugging five more doubles and three more home runs this past season, he saw his batting line drop. A triple-slash of .255/.314/.416 isn’t ideal.

But maybe a fresh start in Toronto will rejuvenate the 30-year-old. In the meantime, the Toronto Blue Jays are looking forward to 2018, hoping to put a disappointing season (76-86) behind them.

But they still have plenty of work to do. And, the AL East isn’t getting any easier.
