In a move that doesn’t seem to be getting discussed that much, the Red Sox pulled off a “trade” for a new manager. Former Blue Jays manager John Farrell (who was once the pitching coach in Boston) is now the Red Sox manager. In exchange, the Red Sox sent utility infielder Mike Aviles to Toronto.
Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos, however, is less than thrilled with how the situation unfolded. Specifically, he seems to be quite annoyed with how the Red Sox handled the negotiations.
There was a lot of, to be completely candid, gamesmanship and a lot of things that went on from a negotiating standpoint. Not on our end, just a lot of things that were coming out that were completely false. We’re pretty good in terms of not putting things out there in the media and leaking things or saying things. The upsetting part for me [was] how many false reports were out there that I didn’t think were fair to John or to myself or to the organization.
I understand why Anthopoulos is annoyed, but he was dealing with the Red Sox. Has any team ever leaked as much info as that team up in Boston? Just look at everything that has happened at Fenway in the last year. There was the beer and fried chicken reports/complaints, the downfall of Terry Francona, and a few handfuls of events surrounding Bobby Valentine. The Red Sox give zero craps about keeping things “internal.” This is how they operate, which to many around the game makes zero sense.
Anthopoulos has a history of keeping trades, free agent signings, and other prospective moves under wraps. He doesn’t share those things with the media. Then, he gets involved in a move with the Red Sox and every aspect of the negotiations becomes public knowledge, including the fact that the Red Sox came after Farrell last year only to turn down Anthopoulos’s request for Clay Bucholz.
Anthopoulos has every right to be annoyed with the Red Sox, but before he airs his grievances, he needs to remember who he was laying in bed with. The Red Sox are the equivalent of that one friend you have who can’t wait to share his sexual escapades, including the most minute details. Usually, that guy is full of crap. I guess you could say the same about the Red Sox.
