Toronto Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos said he was frustrated that news of former manager John Farrell taking the Boston Red Sox job was leaked to the media before it was official. Reports came out Saturday that the Red Sox hired Farrell, but it was not approved by the Major League Baseball commissioner's office until Sunday. "It probably didn't go as smoothly as we think it could have," Anthopolous said in the Boston Globe Sunday night. "That's just reality. ... The fact that this even leaked last night, this was not a done deal last night. It was not supposed to happen that way. It was supposed to happen collectively today." The Red Sox fired Bobby Valentine a day after the season ended. He managed the club for just one year. Farrell was an early rumored candidate. He was also pursued by the Red Sox last year after the team let Terry Francona go, but the Blue Jays would not permit Farrell to interview with them. He still had two years left on his contract. This time, Farrell was allowed to meet with the Red Sox. "John expressed to me that he'd really like an opportunity to pursue that if it came about," Anthopoulos said. "As John explained it to me, this was a dream job for him, an opportunity he really wanted to pursue." The Blue Jays essentially traded Farrell to the Red Sox for infielder Mike Aviles and right-handed pitcher David Carpenter as compensation. Anthopoulos said the negotiations with the Red Sox hit rough patches. "There was a lot of, to be completely candid, gamesmanship and a lot of things that went on from a negotiating standpoint," he said. "Not on our end, just a lot of things that were coming out that were completely false. We're pretty good in terms of not putting things out there in the media and leaking things or saying things. The upsetting part for me were how many false reports were out there that I didn't think were fair to John or to myself or to the organization." Anthopolous said he did not think the leaks came from Red Sox manager Ben Cherington and that the teams' ownership groups respect each other. But he does believe someone from the Red Sox side was the culprit. "Beyond that, I think there's so many other potential people involved with ties," Anthopolous said. "I wish I could tell you where a lot of this stuff came from. I just thought it was unfortunate overall. ... With a transaction like this, you'd love it to be a little more smooth. It just seemed like a lot of the things that came out didn't come out from the Toronto media. It seemed like it came out of the Boston market." But Anthopoulos does not regret freeing Farrell to pursue his dream job. "He stayed even-keeled," Anthopoulos said. "Obviously he dealt with a lot of challenges across the board with the injuries this past year, changes in the roster. Very prepared, there's no doubt about that as well. I can go on a lot of ways. ... I wish John well and thank him for what he did. The work ethic did not waver." He did not blame Farrell for any clubhouse problems that occurred, attributing it to a product of a losing team. Anthopoulos said each of the Blue Jays coaches could interview with other teams. First base coach Torey Lovullo, who managed the Red Sox's Class AAA Pawtucket club in 2010, may be a Red Sox coaching candidate.
