Blue Jays Nation’s Pre-Season Prospect Countdown – No. 39 Dasan Brown

This is Blue Jays Nation’s annual pre-season list, in which I’ll take a look at the top 50 prospects in the organization. We’ll look at the player’s stats, my observations, and other publications’ scouting reports if available.

Let’s take a look at Dasan Brown.

Getting to know Dasan Brown…

Position: Outfielder

Bats: Right

Born: September 25, 2001

Acquired: 3rd-round, 2019 draft (Blue Jays

2023 Team: High-A Vancouver

Previous Ranking: 33

Brown made his full-season debut in 2021 with the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays, where he slashed .212/.310/.323 with four home runs in 226 plate appearances for a 79 wRC+. An early worrisome sign that has continued to plague Brown was his high 32.7 K% that season.

The 2022 season, though, was Brown’s breakout year. It first started in Single-A, where he slashed .279/.369/.450 with four homers in 162 plate appearances, along with a 10.5 BB% and a 27.8 K% for a 135 wRC+. He continued his great play with the High-A Vancouver Canadians, slashing .298/.329/.411 with two home runs in 176 plate appearances, along with an 8 BB% and 28.4 K%. It’s worth noting that Brown hit three home runs in three games during the Northwest League Championship Series.

Brown struggled in 2023 as he repeated the High-A level. With Vancouver, he slashed .218/.309/.315 with seven home runs in 463 plate appearances. The good news is that the 22-year-old’s K% dropped to 25.1%, the lowest it had ever been.

The centre fielder ranks on several lists. For Fangraphs, he ranks 23rd overall and it’s noted that he has great speed (80 grade) and has great defence (60 current, 70 future). However, the bat is weak as he’s graded with a 30 hit tool and 40 raw power.

Scott Mitchell has Brown as his 29th-best Blue Jays prospect, noting that his bat is still raw due to his approach and “swing plane issues”. However, both Mitchell and Fangraphs note that he’s probably going to be a major leaguer due to his speed and defence.

With that being said, if Brown can figure out his 2022-form, he goes from a fifth-outfielder and defensive replacement to a very interesting prospect that can hit for average and a little bit of power. Easier said than done, of course, but the 22-year-old still remains the Blue Jays’ most toolsy prospect.
