Bobby V. meets with Boston GM

Bobby Valentine has interviewed to become manager of the Boston Red Sox, the sixth person to be brought in for a talk with general manager Ben Cherington. Valentine, who's working as an analyst for ESPN, met with the Red Sox brain trust this month and talked with reporters Monday at Fenway Park. Valentine managed in the major leagues with the Texas Rangers (1985-92) and New York Mets (1996-02), finishing up his two major league stints 45 games above .500. He also managed in Japan from 2004-09, winning the Japan Series in 2005 with the Chiba Lotte Marines. Sandy Alomar Jr., Pete Mackanin, Dale Sveum, Gene Lamont and Torey Lovullo have also interviewed for the job. Cherington said Monday that Alomar is no longer in the running; Sveum was hired by the Chicago Cubs.
