Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut will be naming former Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine as their new athletic director on Tuesday, according to William Paxton of CtPost. Valentine interviewed for the job, which is being vacated by the retiring Don Cook on July 1, in mid-January. Valentine had this to say on Thursday when reached for comment. "An intriguing opportunity has been presented to me and it's something I really feel I can enjoy doing and I feel could be mutually beneficial." Talk about a drastic career change. In the past year and a half, Valentine has gone from a commentator on Sunday Night Baseball, to manager of hte Red Sox, to a contributor at NBC Sports Radio (a job that it's assumed he'll be keeping with his new role, but who knows), and now, to an athletic director at a midmajor school in Connecticut. Believe it or not, this isn't the most bizarre job that the former BoSox manager has had. In January 2011, Valentine was named the director of public health and safety for the city of Stamford, Connecticut. If anything, Valentine is showing that he has non-baseball talents to add onto his resume. [CT Post] [follow]
