Boston Red Sox
Chicago White Sox
Through all the injuries and headaches and lousy pitching performances and everything else, the Red Sox find themselves at a game over .500 at the moment and just 3.5 games out in the AL Wild-Card race. Can Boston make up some ground this weekend when it hosts the 44-60 Minnesota Twins for four games at Fenway Park? Let’s consider, and contemplate some free MLB picks.
Streak Snapped; Start Another One?
The Red Sox had just won four games in a row, over the AL East-leading Yankees and the Tigers, before losing to Detroit Wednesday 7-5. So while Boston is only 10-9 since the All-Star break it’s by no means out of the running for a playoff spot, because the Angels and A’s, owners of the two AL Wild-Card spots at the moment, have themselves both been treading water recently.
Minnesota, meanwhile, also just had a four-game winning streak, but it lost the last two games of its just-completed series with the White Sox.

BEST OF MAXIM
BOSTON -- On a day that Bobby Valentine experienced the heat, the Red Sox offense turned it up. The spark came straight from the top of the order in Monday's 9-2 win, with Jacoby Ellsbury, Carl Crawford, Dustin Pedroia and Adrian Gonzalez combining to go 11-for-18 with eight doubles and eight RBIs. It was a reminder of the offense's potency. It also set an unprecedented franchise...
Franklin Morales should get used to starting, because it appears increasingly unlikely he'll be doing anything else this season. With the Boston Red Sox in desperate need of consistency from their starting pitchers, Morales once again showed he's ready to take the job in Sunday's 6-4 victory over the Twins. Making his first start since July 13, Morales limited the Twins...
I attended my first Boston Red Sox game in 1972, a 13 inning spectacular punctuated by a Rico Petrocelli grand slam to win it. I was the young little leaguer mimicking Freddie Lynn's dives in the outfield, Butch Hobson's bare handed grabs at third. I cried when they lost the one game playoff to New York, the Bucky Bleepin' Dent game. I stood on the railing outside...
A day wrapping up a disappointing series against the Twins, the Red Sox are still seeing double. Now, in a good way. Adrian Gonzalez drove in three runs, Dustin Pedroia doubled three times and the Red Sox beat up on Yu Darvish to claim their second straight win. After losing four in a row, Boston's got a bit of a hot streak going again, and after eight doubles by the first four...
Justin Morneau became just the fourth Canadian-born player to hit 200 career home runs when he went deep twice Monday in the Twins' 14-3 victory at Cleveland. After struggling through injuries in 2010 and 2011 -- two concussions, nerve damage in his neck and a weak wrist that required surgery among them -- the feat meant more to Morneau than it would have before he missed 81...

This team is unbearable. Yeah, the Sox were able to salvage the final game of the series, 6-4, but they did go into the 9th with a 6-1 lead. Vicente Padilla gave up a pair of homers and a walk in the 9th without recording an out. The most important thing is, they got the win.
The Sox got a pair of runs in the bottom of the 3rd by way of a Carl Crawford ground-out to short that scored...
Charlie Moore only has two prerequisites for guests on Charlie Moore Outdoors. They have to be famous and they have to love the outdoors. Rico Petrocelli, who played for the Red Sox from 1963-76, meets both of Moore's requirements, so he got the privilege of heading out on the lake with Charlie to do some fishing. Lucky for Petrocelli, Moore gave him a healthy compensation for...
The Red Sox were able to score 9 runs on the way to a win last night, however tonight the Sox bats were stopped dead in their tracks when they had to face Dempster. Jon Lester started off looking like it might be one of his best starts of the season, however he let himself get frustrated with the home plate umpire and walked off the mound in line for a loss.
Lester is starting...
BOSTON –– Aaron Cook claims he wasn't worried about his rotation spot. But in reality, the sinkerballer was pitching for his starter's job in Monday's 9-2 win over the Rangers. During his past two starts, Cook was mired in a rut, failing to advance past the fifth inning while surrendering six runs apiece. With Franklin Morales breathing down his neck to re-join the...
In the Red Sox vs Twins series preview last Thursday, I said that anything less than winning 3 of 4 would be a huge disappointment. Now that the opposite has happened, I think it’s just about time to give up on the season. In Thursday night’s 5-0 loss, Boston was held scoreless by a [...]
BOSTON -- The Red Sox gave Yu Darvish an inhospitable welcome in his first appearance at Fenway Park, as the Boston beat the Texas Rangers 9-2 Monday night. Dustin Pedroia had three of Boston's eight doubles, with Carl Crawford and Jacoby Ellsbury adding two apiece. Crawford knocked in three runs. Darvish took the loss, falling to 11-8 with a 4.57 ERA. He went 6 2/3 innings...
CLEVELAND (AP) -- Justin Morneau homered twice and drove in four runs, Joe Mauer had three RBIs and Ryan Doumit hit a three-run homer to lead the Minnesota Twins to a 14-3 victory over Cleveland on Monday night, the Indians' 10th straight loss.
Ben Revere had four of the Twins' 14 hits and extended his hitting streak to 20 games while Josh Willingham hit his 29th homer,...
CLEVELAND (AP) -- Tsuyoshi Nishioka's sacrifice fly scored the go-ahead run in the ninth inning and the Minnesota Twins rallied for a 7-5 victory over Cleveland, sending the Indians to their 11th straight loss.
Minnesota scored three times off All-Star closer Chris Perez (0-4), who blew his second save opportunity in three days.
The Indians led 5-1 after six innings, but two...
Editor's note: The temperature gauge is a Bill James-created statistic that measures how hot or cold hitters are. We will spotlight Red Sox and opposing team temperatures on game days. After missing Monday's series opener between the Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox with a shoulder issue, Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus is back in the lineup Tuesday, binging one of the team...
