Boston College really wants to play their scheduled game against Army this weekend. So much so that they’re willing to pay for the team’s travel expenses. With the government shutdown still ongoing, the Department of Defense decided to suspend all intercollegiate athletics at the nation’s service academies, which, as you may have realized already, included Army. That has put the Eagles’ scheduled showdown with the Black Knights at Alumni Stadium this Saturday into question. But BC is pulling out all the stops to try and ensure they can play the game. ”We have been considering and engaging all possibilities in order to play Saturday’s football game, including offering financial assistance to Army for travel,” BC athletic director Brad Bates said on Wednesday, according to Yahoo Sports. “We have been told by officials at the US Military Academy, however, that this is not solely a financial decision. I remain in close communication with Army AD Boo Corrigan and we expect a decision will be made by noon tomorrow. We will provide an update as soon as we have more information.” BC’s motivation behind the offer might be a bit self serving as, at 2-2 on the season, they are still holding out hope of locking down a spot in a bowl game come December. Playing Army, who is 2-3 on the year, gives them an important chance to claim another victory and inch closer to that all-important six-win total. Navy did announce on Wednesday afternoon that they would be playing their game against Air Force on Saturday, so there is at least some hope of a game on the Heights this weekend.
