(Getty Images) BOSTON—The Boston Red Sox have activated Matt Thornton from the 15-day disabled list and optioned pitcher Brayan Villarreal to Triple-A Pawtucket the team announced on Sunday. Villarreal was optioned after Saturday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers and Thornton is expected to be available for Sunday night’s contest as the Red Sox wrap up their series in Los Angeles. Thornton has been on the disabled list since August 7 with a right oblique strain. He performed respectably prior to the injury posting a 0-2 record with a 2.16 ERA in 10 games after being acquired by the Local Nine on July 12. Overall this season, he is 0-4 with a 3.47 ERA in 50 games between the Chicago White Sox and Red Sox. Villarreal made his Red Sox debut on Monday walking Marco Scutaro, the only batter he faced, with the bases loaded to give the San Francisco Giants a 3-2 victory. He was acquired from the Detroit Tigers on July 30 as part of the three-team, seven-player deal that sent Jake Peav...

Peavy Goes Nine, Napoli Goes Nuts

How do you put the exclamation point on winning a series against the hottest team in the National League and the team you’re the odds-on favorite to meet in the World Series? If you’re Mike Napoli, whose beard is hand-crafted from the finest children’s nightmares, you blast a two run homer, then step back into the dugout with your fists raised up in the air and screaming something...

Mike Napoli and Adult Film Star Rachel Starr?

If this is true – it’s a great pull by Mike Napoli. The pudgy, bearded Red Sox first baseman will have his hands full with this one. I trust that most of the fans have seen Rachel Starr a time or two or three.

Jon Lester Wins Amica Pitcher of the Week Honors for Best Start in Three Months

Jon Lester appears to be getting back on track after a tough stretch in the middle of the season. Lester went 8 1/3 innings Monday night to grab his 11th win of the season. The lefty didn’t allow any runs and struck out three. Lester allowed six hits and two walks at AT&T Park in San Francisco. Lester wanted to go the full nine, but couldn’t quite make it after allowing singles...

Jon Lester Records Another Quality Start, Continues Streak of Dominance Since All-Star Break (Video)

A four-run first inning was all the offense Jon Lester needed to lead the Red Sox past the surging Dodgers Saturday afternoon. Jonny Gomes‘ three run homer capped the productive inning, and Lester was dominant on the mound, allowing only 3 hits and one earned run, while striking out six over 7 1/3 innings. The left-hander has found his groove in the second half of the season, posting...

Your Morning Dump... Where Ortiz praises Gonzalez

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. If anything, Ortiz believes that occupying the middle of the Red Sox’ batting order with Gonzalez made him a better hitter. For a year and a half, they shared batting tips, with Ortiz giving Gonzalez...

Jerry Remy to Miss More Boston Red Sox Games

(Photo/Greg Anthony) The Boston Red Sox and NESN have been without their color commentator during Red Sox broadcasts while Jerry Remy stepped away for a leave of absence, following the arrest of Remy’s son Jared. Jared Remy was arrested on Aug. 16 for allegedly fatally stabbing his girlfriend, Jennifer Martel in Waltham, Mass. Dennis Eckersley has been filling in for the long...

Shut Down Kings

The Red Sox spend the better part of August on the road, so I really wasn’t expecting a 28-0 month out of them. And at 10-11 so far on the month, they’re playing at about the clip I’d figured. What’s more alarming are the thin margins they’re losing games by, coupled with the offense’s maddening propensity to get shut down. So far in August, the Sox have lost seven games...

Red Sox 4, Dodgers 2

Jon Lester pitched three-hit ball into the eighth inning, Jonny Gomes' three-run homer capped a four-run first, and the Boston Red Sox beat Los Angeles 4-2 on Saturday, snapping the Dodgers' four-game winning streak. The Red Sox began the day percentage points behind Tampa Bay for first in the AL East. They won at Dodger Stadium for the first time in five games dating to...

Red Sox Lester shuts down Dodgers, 4-2

There were some anxious moments in the late innings but the Red Sox pitchers rode to the rescue Saturday helping to deliver a 4-2 victory over the white-hot Los Angeles Dodgers. Jon Lester allowed just one run in 7 1/3 innings to win his second straight starts and four relievers combined to get the final five outs as the Dodgers lost for just for just the fourth time in 23 games...

Red Sox Report: Starting Pitching Fuels Series Win Over Dodgers

Jake Peavy capped off a great weekend for Red Sox starting pitching with a complete game last night. Going into the weekend series with the Dodgers the Red Sox drew a lucky straw when they did not have to face two of the top pitchers in the National League in Clayton Kershaw or Zack Greinke. Luck of the calendar seemed to help the Red Sox but still you need to win the games you play...

Dodgers lose to Red Sox 4-2

Hyun-Jin Ryu struggled in the first inning against the Boston Red Sox. Eventually, the rookie settled down but his team mounted its comeback too late. Ryu lost consecutive decisions for the first time in his career, giving up four runs and five hits in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 4-2 loss on Sunday that ended their four-game winning streak. Jonny Gomes hit a three-run homer off...

5:45 p.m.: David Ortiz will be out of the Red Sox’ lineup for the second straight day. Mike Napoli, who continues to deal with plantar fasciitis, will play first base and bat cleanup. Xander Bogaerts collected his first major league hit in Saturday’s win. He’ll get the start on Sunday with a left-hander toeing the rubber for Los Angeles. Sunday’s complete lineups are below...

Four Real: Red Sox vs Dodgers 8-25-13

Jake Peavy pitched a complete game for Boston on Sunday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. (AP photo Marcio Jose Sanchez) Jan-Christian Sorensen Contributing Writer To be honest, the Dodgers didn’t really get a fair Jake in the Game Three finale of the weekend series out in Los Angeles.
