Now that the championship feeling for the Boston Red Sox has finally settled in a bit, let’s rewind and take a look at some of the very best games of the 2013 season.
Warning: This list only includes regular season games.
No.5: A-Rod get’s beaned
The date was August 18, 2013.
The New York Yankees were in town for a Sunday night primetime affair.
Alex Rodriguez was still in the lineup despite a 211-game suspension weighing heavily over his head, and many players around the league didn’t agree with that decision, including Ryan Dempster.
The Sox were up 8 1/2 games in the division heading into the showdown, so it was important not to give the Yankees life, but Dempster couldn’t help himself.
On three consecutive pitches, Dempster was nowhere near the plate, in fact, one was completely behind A-Rod. Then the fourth pitch came and that’s when every Red Sox fan in the world cracked a smile. Rodriguez, clearly the target of the first three pitches, finally took one of the left shoulder, much to the amusement of the Fenway faithful.
While I hated what transpired afterwards, at that moment, I loved what Dempster had done. By his own design, Dempster decided to take his shot at the steroid era in one beautiful sequence of pitches. The Red Sox would go on to lose this game 9-6, but the point was made.
Don’t worry, the rest of the list involves wins.
No. 4: Sox erupt in Detroit
The date was September 4th, 2013.
After facing off against Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer, the final game of the series featured ya boy Dempster once again, and a whole lot of bad pitching from Detroit.
On this night, every member of the Red Sox lineup borrowed their bats from Sammy Sosa. They exploded for 8 home runs, 19 hits, and 20 runs scored. In the 6th inning alone, Boston jumped on Detroit for 8 runs, followed by 5 runs in the 7th, and 2 more just for fun in 8th.
7 different players took the ball out of the park, and the team only left four runners on base.
These were the two very best teams in the American League going head-to-head, so to see the Sox throw up a 20 spot on them was satisfying. It was one of the best offensive games I can recall watching in my lifetime, giving it a deserving spot as the 4th best game of the year.
Scoreboard says it all.
Check back tomorrow for games 3, 2, and 1.
