PLAYERS: Ryan Dempster
TEAMS: Boston Red Sox
Now that the championship feeling for the Boston Red Sox has finally settled in a bit, let’s rewind and take a look at some of the very best games of the 2013 season. Warning: This list only includes regular season games. No.5: A-Rod get’s beaned The date was August 18, 2013. The New York Yankees were in town for a Sunday night primetime affair. Alex Rodriguez was still in the lineup despite a 211-game suspension weighing heavily over his head, and many players around the league didn’t agree with that decision, including Ryan Dempster. Alex Rodriguez The Sox were up 8 1/2 games in the division heading into the showdown, so it was important not to give the Yankees life, but Dempster couldn’t help himself. On three consecutive pitches, Dempster was nowhere near the plate, in fact, one was completely behind A-Rod. Then the fourth pitch came and that’s when every Red Sox fan in the world cracked a smile. Rodriguez, clearly the target of the first three pitches, finally took one of the left shoulder, much to the amusement of the Fenway faithful. While I hated what transpired afterwards, at that moment, I loved what Dempster had done. By his own design, Dempster decided to take his shot at the steroid era in one beautiful sequence of pitches. The Red Sox would go on to lose this game 9-6, but the point was made. Don’t worry, the rest of the list involves wins. No. 4: Sox erupt in Detroit The date was September 4th, 2013. After facing off against Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer, the final game of the series featured ya boy Dempster once again, and a whole lot of bad pitching from Detroit. On this night, every member of the Red Sox lineup borrowed their bats from Sammy Sosa. They exploded for 8 home runs, 19 hits, and 20 runs scored. In the 6th inning alone, Boston jumped on Detroit for 8 runs, followed by 5 runs in the 7th, and 2 more just for fun in 8th. 7 different players took the ball out of the park, and the team only  left four runners on base. These were the two very best teams in the American League going head-to-head, so to see the Sox throw up a 20 spot on them was satisfying. It was one of the best offensive games I can recall watching in my lifetime, giving it a deserving spot as the 4th best game of the year. Scoreboard says it all.   Check back tomorrow for games 3, 2, and 1.

Your Morning Dump... Where Napoli is shopping around

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. According to a report from Yahoo! Sports’ Jeff Passan, first baseman Mike Napoli has received a multi-year offer from the Red Sox but wants to shop around to see what other teams might consider. Napoli...

David Ross recruiting Tim Hudson to Red Sox?

The Boston Red Sox build their 2013 World Champions with strategic free agent acquisitions, and General Manager Ben Cherington appears to be using the same approach to try and repeat in 2014. Boston Red Sox catcher David Ross appears to have been in touch with first tier free agents RHP Tim Hudson and catcher Brian McCann to lure them to beantown. According to a Tweet from Boston...

Let Mike Napoli Shop (and then Go)– We have Options Too!

As a lifelong Sox fans, it sometimes pains me to have to take a position against a player I have grown accustomed to. In the case of Mike Napoli,  I will try and leave this analysis in the “just business” category – you know, the same thought process the big leaguers use before telling their former team to shove the multi-million dollar offer. Napoli has rejected the initial...

Red Sox run rampant in early rumors

Early in free agency, one agent says, "every team is interested in every player." While that is an over-statement, most clubs generally cast a wide net, and their interest in some free agents is greater than their interest in others. Reports link the Red Sox to outfielder Carlos Beltran, right-hander Tim Hudson and catcher Carlos Ruiz, among others. In addition, sources...

Rumor: Red Sox may have some interest in Mark Trumbo

The Red Sox may be in need of a first baseman and the Angels are known to have Trumbo on the block. If Mike Napoli does not re-sign with the Boston Red Sox, the team will look at Mark Trumbo as a possible option to take over at first base, reports Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe. The Angels have been rumored to have the big first baseman/outfielder on the trade block. He still...

Wait A Minute, Did The Sox Just Win The WS?

OK, it's confession time. FenwayNation picked your 2013 Carmine Hose to finish no better than fourth in the AL East. We thought the Shane Victorino and Jonny Gomes deals were way too much money for what we called 'aging platoon players'. We were not at all confident that Jon Lester, Clay Buchholz or John Lackey could rebound and have decent—let alone banner— years...

Your Morning Dump...Where is the best spot for Xander?

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. Long-term, is Bogaerts better suited to play third base or stay at his natural shortstop? “A lot of people have asked me, within the organization, ‘What do you think?’ ” Red Sox third base...

Jake Peavy ‘Wasn’t Crazy About’ Jonny Gomes Before Joining Red Sox, But Duck Boat Chat Helped Break Ice

Jake Peavy wasn’t Jonny Gomes‘ biggest fan before arriving in Boston. Peavy recently spoke with the Boston Herald about buying a duck boat following the Red Sox’ World Series rolling rally. He noted that the idea for the off-the-wall purchase stemmed from a conversation he had earlier in the season with Gomes, which is pretty funny considering how Peavy initially viewed the...

Report: Stephen Drew Market Heating Up, As ‘Bunch of Teams Moving Quick’ on Free-Agent Shortstop

Stephen Drew‘s name might get tossed around early and often at this week’s MLB GM meetings. According to WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford, “a bunch of teams [are] moving quick” on Drew in the free-agent market. It’s unclear which teams are interested in Drew or how much interest the Red Sox have in re-signing the shortstop, but it certainly sounds like the market could heat up...

Red Sox rumors: Red Sox very interested in Tim Hudson

The 2013 World Series champion Boston Red Sox will not rest on their recent victory; they have already started to try ensure a repeat in 2014. One plan focuses on improving the starting rotation, which really does not need much improvement. Still, as CBS Sports.com’s baseball insider Jon Heyman puts it, the Red Sox are “big admirers” of starter Tim Hudson, and they “really...

Report: Tim Hudson, Red Sox Show Mutual Interest on Free-Agent Market

Tim Hudson wants a ring, and the Red Sox have won three World Series titles in 10 years. Think about it. It appears that Hudson and the Red Sox might be considering such. CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman reports that the Red Sox are among several teams to check in on Hudson, and Yahoo! Sports’ Jeff Passan reports that the interest is mutual. This isn’t the first time that the Red...

Should the Red Sox give Kendrys Morales a look?

Ryan MacLeod (Ryanmacleod15) Contributing Writer If Mike Napoli decides to test the free agent market it leaves a gaping hole at the first base position and in the lineup. In an ideal world, Napoli would return and sign a 2 or 3 year deal with the Red Sox, but this is still up in the air. With his decision not quite being known by the organization it may be time to look at potential...
