David Ortiz is back on the disabled list. Ortiz's return to the Boston Red Sox's lineup lasted exactly one game -- Friday night against the Kansas City Royals -- before his strained right Achilles tendon forced him out of action again. Ortiz, who initially missed 35 games with the injury, will receive a platelet-rich plasma injection that he believes will aid the healing process and allow him to play again this season. "I'd like to be out there playing, helping out," Ortiz said Monday before the Red Sox's 5-1 win in the series finale against the Royals at Fenway Park. "The good thing that we talked about today is we're going to try this one PRP injection to see how it goes in next couple of weeks. And if I'm good, I can just go back out there and play." Ortiz conceded last week that he likely would need to play through a degree of pain for the remainder of the season. However, his sore right heel flared again Friday night after leggi...

Red Sox put Ortiz on the 15-day DL

David Ortiz doesn't want his season -- and possibly his Boston Red Sox career -- to end on the disabled list. The Red Sox placed Ortiz back on the 15-day disabled list Monday because of lingering problems with a strained right Achilles tendon, but the designated hitter said he hopes to play again this season. Speaking to reporters in Boston's dugout about 45 minutes before...

Has David Ortiz Played His Last Game In A Boston Red Sox Uniform?

The Boston Red Sox are weighing whether or not they will shut down designated hitter David Ortiz for the rest of the 2012 MLB season, as the slugger continues to battle a lingering Achilles strain. With Boston having traded so many of their key players and with the team basically out of the race for any postseason berth, Ortiz could return to the disabled list once again...

David Ortiz Sits Once Again in Daisuke Matsuzaka's Return Against Royals

Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington wasn't willing to make an informal announcement about David Ortiz on Monday morning during a radio appearance. He said that would be ironed out later in the day. There may be indication that Ortiz will be at the very least heading back to the disabled list with the omission of the designated hitter's name from the Boston lineup for the...

David Ortiz Opts for PRP Treatment Over Surgery in Hopes of Returning This Season

BOSTON -- Another injection will be needed to save David Ortiz's season. After missing the past three games with Achilles soreness, the Red Sox designated hitter will receive a platelet-rich plasma injection to relieve the discomfort and return to the diamond. In the meantime, the Red Sox placed Ortiz back on the 15-day disabled list. Ortiz will be prohibited from flying right...

Red Sox DH Ortiz goes back on 15-day DL

The Boston Red Sox have placed designated hitter David Ortiz back on the 15-day disabled list Monday due to lingering problems with a strained right Achilles. Ortiz, who suffered the injury in mid-July, returned to action in Friday's win over Kansas City, getting two hits and two RBIs, but has not played since due to discomfort. Ortiz said he'll have an injection in the...

David Ortiz, Red Sox Delay Decision on How to Go Forward With Achilles Injury (Video)

It's no secret that the Red Sox have been struggling without David Ortiz, and the numbers paint a pretty grim picture of how the offense has fared without Big Papi. Before Sunday afternoon's 8-6 win over the Kansas City Royals, reporters were told that a decision on what to do about Ortiz and his troublesom Achilles would come down later in the day. Well, Ortiz did address...

David Ortiz May Be Headed Back to Disabled List With Achilles Injury That Just Won't Heal (Video)

David Ortiz has wanted to get back into the Red Sox lineup ever since he first tweaked his Achilles while running the bases in July. But Ortiz's Achilles has been setting the agenda for the Red Sox slugger, keeping him on the disabled list and possibly sending him back there now. Jim Rice and The Boston Globe's Michael Vega give the inside scoop on Ortiz's injury and...

David Ortiz Too Important to Red Sox to Risk Further Injury to Achiles (Video)

David Ortiz was unquestionably the Red Sox most consistent, and consequently important, player during the 2012 season. And while he attempts to return from injury, it may behoove him to simply shift his concentration to next season. Ortiz, who has missed more than a month with an Achilles injury, returned over the weekend for a one night stint with his mates. The DH went 2-for-4...

Red Sox win, but the talk is about Ortiz

BOSTON - The Red Sox hung on for a win at Fenway Park Sunday, but much of the talk before and after the 8-6 victory over the Royals centered around David Ortiz and the likelihood the slugger will return to the disabled list Monday and could be shut down for the season. That, in turn, could mean the DH has played his final game with the Red Sox. Ortiz, who returned Friday night...

First pitch is in just a half an hour. 11:30 a.m.: It's been a crazy few days for Red Sox fans, so I thought I'd get you caught up in case you missed any of the action...

Daisuke Matsuzaka: A Worthy Gamble

On Monday, the Boston Red Sox activated Daisuke Matsuzaka and sent David Ortiz to the DL. The recent Dodgers-Red Sox super-trade has cleared the slate of expectations for Boston’s 2013 team, and seems unlike they would be interested in giving Dice-K another go around while their minor leagues brim with newfound pitching talent. And though it is unwise to call the recent trade a...
