Found April 23, 2013 on Pirates Prospects:
Brandon Inge has been activated from the DL and is starting at third tonight. The Pittsburgh Pirates have activated third baseman Brandon Inge, and have him in tonight’s lineup at third base. Inge was recently on a rehab assignment in Indianapolis, batting for a .150/.320/.283 line in 60 at-bats. The Pirates are going up against left-hander Cole Hamels tonight. Inge has done well in his career against left-handers, while Pedro Alvarez has not. It’s probably too early to say that the Pirates are platooning Alvarez, but that seems to be the only reason to put Inge in the lineup right away. He wasn’t really doing well against left-handers in Triple-A, and doesn’t seem to provide much of an upgrade over guys like Josh Harrison or Jordy Mercer. The only thing he has is veteran presence, which the Pirates have plenty of, and some pop in his bat in previous years, which they could get from other internal options who look better than Inge both in the short-term and long-term. To make room for Inge, Alex Presley has been optioned to Triple-A.

The Bullpen Didn’t Need Burnett’s Control Issues

A.J. Burnett struggled with his control tonight, leading to more innings from the bullpen. Looking at the stat line, A.J. Burnett didn’t have a terrible start. He gave up just two runs on five hits and three walks in five innings, while striking out seven. Looking beyond the stats, that start was definitely not what the Pirates needed right now. The bullpen is currently over-worked...

Prospect Notebook: Pirates Won’t Hold Oliver Back, Cole Having Command Issues

Andy Oliver is off to a great start with the Pirates. One of the top starters in the minor league system this year has been Andy Oliver. His start last week was the highest game score in the minor league system this year, and it was the second of three weeks where he was the top pitcher. Oliver was acquired from the Detroit Tigers over the off-season in a one-for-one trade for catching...

Andrew McCutchen Is Pissed Off That MLB Network Showed Phillies Home Runs

Andrew McCutchen is one of baseball's most talented young players. Apparently he wants people to know it, too. After Wednesday's 5-3 defeat of the Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen was watching MLB Network, probably to admire himself, when he saw the Phillies-Pirates highlights. He was not happy with what...

Game 20: Pirates 2 Braves 0

Of course Brandon Inge would be the player to get the key RBI double in this game. Of course he'd be the one to turn in two stellar plays at third base to keep the Phillies off of the board with the Pirates clinging to a 1-0 lead and the Phillies threatening. Of course that's how it was going to happen after me and most Pirate fans and bloggers spent a good part of the afternoon...

Pirates 5, Phillies 3

Awesome comeback win for the Pirates tonight. Your heroes? Brandon Inge and Pedro Alvarez, of course! Those two (and several others) were key in helping the Bucs battle back and earn their second straight win – and their 11th in the last 15 games. The game started off as a pitcher’s duel between Roy Halladay and Wandy Rodriguez. Halladay seemed wild in the first inning but got...

Pirates Shut Out Phillies 2-0 as Pitching Continues to Thrive

If Jeff Locke was pitching to save his spot in the rotation… he is well on his way. Jeff Locke kept the Phillies scoreless for six innings. Locke put together the best start of his brief Major League career Tuesday night to tack on another outing to a strong run of Pirates’ pitching. After some early hiccups, Locke recorded outs on the last eight hitters he faced, then turned...

Mazzaro steps up in Bucs bullpen

Mazzaro has made three appearances and has not allowed a run. PiratesDugout.com's George Von Benko caught up with Mazzaro recently.

Pirates 2, Phillies 0

Jeff Locke pitched six innings of two-hit ball and Gaby Sanchez homered off Cole Hamels to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Philadelphia Phillies 2-0 on Tuesday night. Locke (2-1) struck out six and walked two. After wriggling out of a jam in the fourth, he retired his last eight batters - striking out three of the final four. Sanchez also doubled and Brandon Inge had an RBI...

Phillies 3, Pirates 2

The Pirates’ momentum (and/or luck) ran out on Monday night, as the Phillies surprisingly outpitched them and were able to pull off a narrow one-run victory. The Bucs fall to 10-9 and now face an uphill climb for the rest of this four game set on the other side of the state. Over the weekend against the Braves, the Pirates won a couple of games in which the pitching matchup didn’t...

Hamels Tough Luck Loser, Phillies Bats in Locke-down

In what was one of the more miserable games of the season, the Phillies fell to the Pirates, 2-0. Hamels Moves to 0-3: -Just call it the Curse of Cliff. When your starting pitcher throws well enough that he should have a victory. Cole was pretty much on his game from the start, except for mistakes to Brandon Inge and Gaby Sanchez that hurt him. Hamels has gotten better every start...
