he Diamondbacks beat San Diego 6-1 Monday night on the strength of Brandon McCarthy’s first victory since May 24. McCarthy spotted San Diego a run in the top of the first inning but then showed great command for the remainder scattering five hits with no walks over seven lightly hit innings. Martin Prado knocked in three runs starting with a go-ahead sacrifice fly off a high fastball in the fourth after Paul Goldschmidt’s third career triple which drove in a run tied the game. Two innings later Prado smacked a one-out bases-loaded single to left for a 4-1 lead. Prado is 14 for 28 with runners in scoring position this month. “It was a difficult couple months I had in the first half” Prado said. “It’s good to feel this way and contribute to the team.” The Diamondbacks scratched out two more runs in the seventh inning with one hit a Gerardo Parra leadoff double from eight batters. Two walks and an error scored Parra and Goldschmidt added a second RBI by beating out a potential double-play grounder for a 6-1 lead. McCarthy’s bounce-back: Once McCarthy was pulled from the third inning Wednesday at Cincinnati he started looking at film of a potential issue and traced back his issues to a body alignment that had been slipping since last season. He said he felt his best Monday night since before last season’s shoulder injury after a back-to-basics week with pitching coach Charles Nagy of keeping his front side closed and glove close to his body. When he does that he said he throws harder his pitch has later movement and he can get away with mistakes more often. “There was just a feeling where it clicked one day and it was back and I felt like my old self” McCarthy said. “I was able to take that to the game and use everything.” McCarthy had taken a loss in five consecutive outings with an ERA of 8.59 including four losses since being recalled from Triple-A Reno on Aug. 2. On Monday night he opened the game surrendering a sharp single and an infield single to lead to a run but only allowed three more hits over seven innings. It was the first time the Diamondbacks had surrendered one run in a game since Aug. 6.
