In a season filled with ups and downs and season-ending disappointment for the Brewers, Brandon Woodruff was a rock-solid performer for the team’s pitching staff.

Woodruff led the team with 13 wins, compiling a 13-4 record, and a .765 winning percentage. He was one of 10 MLB pitchers last season with 10 or more wins and a .750 win percentage. The Dodgers Tony Gonsolin led the majors in 2022 with a 16-1 record (.941 win percentage).

Brewers’ hurlers with 10+ wins/.750 win percentage seasons

For “Woodie,” it was the second time in his career that he finished the season with 10+ wins and a win percentage above .750. Woodruff was 11-3 (.786) in 2019.

He became only the second Brewers’ pitcher to accomplish that feat. Pete Vukovich did it in consecutive years: He was 14-4 (.778) in 1981 and 18-6 (.750) in 1982. Four other Brewers’ pitchers have won 10+ games with a win percentage of .750 or above in a season: Cal Eldred, 11-2 (.846 in 1992); CC Sabathia, 11-2 (.846 in 2008); Moose Haas, 13-3 (.813 in 1983); and Chase Anderson, 12-4 (.750 in 2017).

Woodruff’s 13-4 record in 2022 also vaulted into the top spot in the Brewers’ career winning percentage category. He now has a career record of 41-25, a winning percentage of .621. Of all Brewers pitchers with 40 or more career wins, he now holds the top spot with that .621 win percentage, just 15 points ahead of Pete Vukovich.

Woodie takes the top spot in career-winning percentage

Here are the 11 Brewers’ pitchers who have career winning percentages over .500 (minimum of 40 wins to qualify for this list).

  1. Brandon Woodruff, 41-25 .621
  2. Pete Vukovich, 40-26 .606
  3. Teddy Higuera, 94-64 .595
  4. Yovani Gallardo, 89-64 .582
  5. Zach Davies, 43-32 .573
  6. Mike Caldwell, 102-80 .560
  7. Moose Haas, 91-79 .535
  8. Lary Sorensen, 52-46 .531
  9. Chris Bosio, 67-62 .519
  10. Bob McClure, 45-43 .511
  11. Ben Sheets, 86-83 .509

Woodruff is currently one of 106 pitchers in MLB history (since 1901) with 40 or more career wins and a win percentage of .620 or above. A pair of current Los Angeles Dodgers hurlers top this list. Julio Urias is first on the list with a career 49-17 record (.742 win percentage); his teammate Walker Buehler is also at .742, but percentage points behind Urias with a 46-16 record.

One final note: Since 2019, there have been only four pitchers who had multiple seasons with 10+ wins and a win percentage of .750 or above. The four are Walker Buehler, Clayton Kershaw, Justin Verlander, and Brandon Woodruff.
