ATLANTA -- Mike Minor solidified his spot in the Atlanta Braves' inconsistent rotation with a Tom Glavine-esque fastball -- 89 mph -- with which he struck out nine Philadelphia Phillies over eight innings to lead the Braves to a 2-1 win Saturday. Craig Kimbrel pitched the ninth for his 30th save.

Minor didn't rattle when Chase Utley hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, retiring the Phillies in order in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth.

Joe Blanton (8-9) had pitched a complete-game shutout against the Braves this season and he also had given up six runs (five earned) to them in 6 1/3 innings for a loss. Saturday he posted another solid outing, not allowing a baserunner after Jason Heyward's RBI single in the third inning.

Blanton and Minor ranked 1-2 in the National League in most home runs allowed coming into Saturday's game. Minor tied Blanton at 22 with Utley's homer in the fourth inning.

Both pitchers, back-of-the-rotation starters, pitched well enough to win through five innings. They were matching each other nearly pitch for pitch, Minor allowing only that one run through 65 pitches, Blanton having been dinked for one run in the first inning -- Chipper Jones drove in Martin Prado on a sacrifice fly -- and another in the third to fall behind 2-0.

Michael Bourn led off the third with a single, then got to second on a sharply hit ball to Utley. Jones got Bourn to third on a ground-out, and Jason Heyward drove him in with another sharply hit ball to Utley.

NOTES: Phillies manager Charlie Manuel hasn't liked what he has seen from his team all year, and he isn't talking about the injuries. "One time we had the best attitude and the best hustle of any team in baseball," he said before Saturday's game. "We've kind of slipped a little bit." He said he was talking about the whole organization, not any one individual. ... C Carlos Ruiz got the start off Saturday; he'll be in Sunday's lineup. Manuel says Ruiz has been playing with plantar fasciitis, which is being managed by the training staff. ... Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez announced that RHP Jair Jurrjens will be in the bullpen for the foreseeable future and that RHP Kris Medlen will start against the Marlins on Tuesday, barring a trade or an injury. ... SS Andrelton Simmons expects to have the cast on his right hand removed Friday. Team hand specialist Dr. Gary Lourie has been reducing the size of the cast to allow an increasing range of movement. ... OF Matt Diaz has been put in an arm cast to immobilize his sore right thumb. Team doctors are hopeful that will allow it to heal without surgery.
