Chipper Jones atoned for a costly error by cutting down the potential tying run at the plate and the Atlanta Braves held on to end the Yankees' 10-game winning streak, beating New York 4-3 Tuesday night. The Yankees were trying to match their longest winning string in nearly a half-century. Instead, the Braves threw out two runners at home and won for only the second time in nine games. Jason Heyward singled home the go-ahead run in the sixth inning off Hiroki Kuroda (6-7). Heyward also tripled and scored, and nailed Mark Teixeira at home with a strong throw from right field. Rookie Andrelton Simmons drove in two runs and Jones delivered an RBI double for the slumping Braves. Down by a run, the Yankees threatened in the seventh. Curtis Granderson opened with a single off Jonny Venters, Alex Rodriguez walked and the runners moved up on a groundout. Teixeira followed with a sharp grounder to Jones and Granderson broke home, but the third baseman made a strong throw and catcher...

Heyward bright spot for struggling Braves

Jason Heyward has teased and taunted us with his talent for more than two years. He can hit home runs that are tracked on radar. He can outrun line drives to his left, right, in front of him or over his head. He can throw out any runner at any base. He can't leap tall buildings in a single bound, but his jumping ability and long arms have been known to snare balls destined...

Braves' Beachy to have elbow surgery

Atlanta Braves pitcher Brandon Beachy is going to have reconstructive surgery on his right elbow Thursday, and will miss the rest of the season. Manager Fredi Gonzalez made the announcement after the Braves beat the New York Yankees on Wednesday, hours after Beachy received a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews. The 25-year-old Beachy was put on the 15-day disabled list Sunday...

Cano No Help This Year

Compared to the last few seasons where the Yankees have become accustomed to the consistent production from the bat of Robinson Cano, there hasn’t been too much of the same on display this season. His .299 batting average, 14 home runs, and 33 RBIs that pad his stats this year are a bit misleading, because [...]

BP Unfiltered: Yankees Fans Gloating About Home Runs: The Sequel by Ben Lindbergh

Interesting things happen when home runs are hit to the short porch in right field at Yankee Stadium. In Game 4 of the 2010 ALCS, Robinson Cano hit a home run there, just beyond the grasp of Rangers right fielder Nelson Cruz. That home run made the score 1-0, Yankees. The Rangers went on to win the game 10-3, so the home run itself was meaningless. (Well, it might have had meaning...

Sabathia finally keeps pace with rotation mates

Despite a 2-1 record and a 3.86 ERA in his last three starts, CC Sabathia wasn't happy with his work this month. The left-hander had allowed 25 hits and five walks in 21 innings, taking the only loss a New York Yankees starter has suffered in June. Sabathia delivered a vintage performance Monday, throwing a complete game in the Yankees' 6-2 win over the Atlanta Braves,...

Braves need rotation answers with Beachy out

The Braves pounded five home runs in their victory over the Yankees on Wednesday, but they were hit harder by the news that Brandon Beachy will need Tommy John surgery. Beachy and the organization were optimistic that surgery wouldn't be needed, but remained realistic in the fact that the ligament tear in his right elbow likely would have to be repaired. Word came down late...
