CHICAGO The Atlanta Braves activated outfielder Jason Heyward from the disabled list, and he'll wear a special face mask to protect his jaw when he bats leadoff Friday afternoon against the Chicago Cubs. Heyward had been sidelined for a month after his right jaw was broken by a pitch from New York Mets left-hander Jon Niese on Aug. 21. Heyward will wear the mask on the right side of his batting helmet. He'll also play in center field on Friday. The plan calls for him to play five innings or get three at-bats, whichever comes first. Heyward says he's "not going to be as good today as I will be in five days. But you have to start the process sometime."

Braves activate Jason Heyward from DL

The Atlanta Braves have activated outfielder Jason Heyward from the disabled list. Heyward, 24, has not played a game since taking a fastball to the jaw on Aug. 21 from New York Mets pitcher Jon Niese. The timetable for Heyward’s return always seemed to suggest he would be back with roughly two weeks remaining in the season but reports from various media members suggested he was...

Jason Heyward returns to Braves lineup

Atlanta Braves' outfielder Jason Heyward surprised manager Fredi Gonzalez on Friday saying he was ready to play, so the Braves activated him from the disabled list in time for the game against the Cubs.  Heyward started in center field and batted first in his return to action. As reported by Mark Bowman of MLB.com, Heyward's return is just about a month after being...

Jason Heyward takes BP, could return to Braves next week

Atlanta Braves outfielder Jason Heyward took batting practice on Wednesday. The session impressed manager Fredi Gonzalez and hitting coach Greg Walker and the Braves are hopeful that Heyward will return next week. “It went well, and that is not an easy thing to do,” Walker said via MLB.com. “Now it is all about him getting his timing.” Heyward has not played since taking...

Fatal fall at Atlanta's Turner Field ruled suicide

Authorities in Atlanta say the death of a man who fell over a railing at Turner Field has been ruled a suicide. Investigators with the Fulton County Medical Examiner's office said Thursday that they discussed the death of 30-year-old Ronald Lee Homer Jr. with his family last week before releasing their findings to the media. Police say Homer died after falling about 85 feet...

Braves give Andrelton Simmons day off on Wednesday to rest neck

The Atlanta Braves have had the NL East won for a very long time, a fact which allows them to give aching players a night off when they need it. Mark Bowman of MLB.com says that was the case for shortstop Andrelton Simmons on Wednesday night, as he was suffering from neck stiffness that he'd been experiencing since Tuesday morning. Prior to the victory over the Washington Nationals...

Braves beat Cubs, trim magic number to 1

After the Braves blew a four-run lead against the lowly Cubs on Friday they needed someone to come through and prevent a recurrence of magic-number anxiety among the faithful. Fitting that it would be Brian McCann to answer the call with a tie-breaking two-out single in the ninth inning sparking a flurry of hits that lifted the Braves to a 9-5 win at Wrigley Field and trimmed their...

Braves reduce magic number to 1

Chris Johnson went 3 for 4 with a home run, and the Atlanta Braves beat the Chicago Cubs 9-5 on Friday to reduce their magic number to clinch the NL East to one. The Braves broke open a tie game in the top of the ninth inning with four runs - all with two outs. Brian McCann and Johnson each had an RBI single, and Andrelton Simmons followed with a two-run double. Freddie Freeman...

Three Cuts: Celebration on hold as Braves fall to Cubs

Once again, the champagne will have to wait. Needing a win to secure a division title, the majors' best bullpen couldn't make Kris Medlen's gem stick as the Cubs scored three runs in the eight to sink the Braves 3-1. The loss left them scoreboard-watching for the second straight night as a Nationals' loss to the Marlins will hand Atlanta its first National League...

Andrelton and Andruw and Defense and Offense

Andrelton Simmons and Andruw Jones have a few things in common: they grew up in Curacao, they came up with the Atlanta Braves, they are superlative up-the-middle defenders with good power for their position but some other offensive flaws, and their names both start with “Andr.” I think that the final similarity between the two is this: they help demonstrate just how hard it is...

Braves remain on brink, lose to Cubs

The Atlanta Braves were in position to celebrate a division championship. Instead, they left themselves with another wait. Dioner Navarro hit a tiebreaking single in a three-run eighth inning, and the Chicago Cubs beat Atlanta 3-1 Saturday to keep the Braves on the brink of the NL East title. Atlanta's magic number remained at one to clinch its first division title since 2005...
