Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez is benching three-time All-Star second baseman Dan Uggla.
Uggla is hitting only .208. Martin Prado is starting at second base against Colorado on Monday for the second straight day.
Gonzalez was Uggla's manager with the Florida Marlins before Atlanta. He says the decision to bench Uggla was ''uncomfortable'' and ''hard, especially with the relationship I have with him.''
Uggla started in this year's All-Star game.
The versatile Prado has been the Braves' left fielder most of the season.
Gonzalez says Uggla, who has 17 homers, could win back the starting job.
The Braves also are without catcher Brian McCann for the second straight day. McCann was given a cortisone shot in his sore right shoulder after Saturday's game and could return on Tuesday.

Atlanta, GA. Atlanta Braves’ Chipper Jones should be the NL MVP for 2012. Chipper isn’t in the top five in any statistical category but is hitting .302 so far this year. He is a career .304 hitter with 1619 career RBI and 2711 hits. I am of the opinion that the MVP of the league should be the player that affects his team the most regardless of statistics. Chipper this year...
Kris Medlen is 6-0 with a 0.54 ERA as a starter this season
Kris Medlen pitched his second complete game in his last 4 starts on Monday. He allowed but 1 unearned run while striking out 12 Colorado Rockies in another masterful performance. Since shifting back to the starting rotation at the end of August, Kris is 6-0 with a 0.54 ERA in 7 starts.
Garnering as much attention as the...
The Phils were victorious yesterday in their second game of the series against the Braves, giving
Lee his fourth win of the season. He pitched a beautiful seven innings in which
he only allowed five hits, walking one and striking out five.
After the seventh, Lee was removed following up a report of
a tight Hamstring. Later, Lee said that it was nothing serious, and just a...
ATLANTA (AP) -- Chipper Jones rounded third base, took one look at his grinning teammates surrounding home plate and flung his batting helmet into the air before jumping into the welcoming party.
The moment Jones said he'll savor in retirement came after a dramatic homer that can help his chances of one more postseason.
Jones hit a three-run homer off Jonathan Papelbon with...
I'm sorry, did something else happen in this game? Because this is all I remember. :D
Second game in two days with Susan. We had the best time! We didn't have our "megaphones" (Chipper posters) today, but it's not like we needed them - there was such a roar for everyone! September callups are always exciting.
Pictures starting with BP, as usual...
Anyone who’s made his way to these electronic pages is like well-aware that Kris Medlen has been excellent of late — is, in fact, the majors’ best pitcher over the last month by most relevant measures. Nor, really, has Medlen been more excellent of late than he was on Monday afternoon against the Colorado Rockies (box), during which game he recorded 12 strikeouts and zero walks...
Greg Maddux comparisons are stupid and lazy, but that was the only thing I could think of as I watched Kris Medlen‘s highlight video from yesterday
Kris Medlen struck out a career high 12 to lead the Atlanta Braves to a 6-1 win over the Colorado Rockies on Monday.
Medlen (7-1) allowed five hits without a walk in his second complete game of the season.
He extended his streak of scoreless innings to 34 2-3 - the Braves' longest since Greg Maddux in 2000 - before the Rockies scored an unearned run in the seventh.
Chipper Jones has been a member of 12 playoff teams with the Atlanta Braves, and his solid play has helped them get in position to qualify again in his farewell season.
The addition of Kris Medlen to the starting rotation has further benefited the cause.
The right-hander seeks to extend his impressive scoreless-innings streak as the Braves host the opener of a four-game series...
