MLB Injury News:
Evan Gattis' tenure as the Atlanta Braves' starting catcher may soon come to an end. Perennial All-Star Brian McCann is on the way back. And he proved that in a big way yesterday. The Braves' catcher started his first rehab game yesterday and homered twice.
David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution says McCann is expected to have 9-12 rehab games before rejoining the Braves. This will give Gattis time to prove whether the first two weeks of the season are indicative of what he can truly be or if the last two weeks are a better reflection of his talents. McCann is a known commodity. He may have an injury history now that could become problematic, but the Braves know he can hit. And he showed that yesterday in his first Class-A Rome rehab assignment when he homered twice.
Gattis came on strong in McCann's absence to start the season. However, he has faltered a bit over the last couple weeks. Since April 12th, Gattis has seen his batting average drop from .391 to .246. His slugging percentage has dropped from .826 to .607. Gattis may simply be experiencing the normal ups and downs of the season, but he may not be given the opportunity to show what he can do over the long haul.
When McCann returns he will take over starting catching duties. The Braves will likely find a place for Gattis to get at-bats, but those at-bats will surely not be as plentiful as they are now. For Braves fans this could be a good thing if McCann produces. However, it could affect the team negatively if Gattis is the real deal and loses playing time. Regardless, it's hard to deny McCann's talents.
The 29-year old McCann was a picture of consistency until his shoulder started acting up. The injury caused him troubles throughout the 2012 season and eventually led to surgery in October. He was trying to get back for Opening Day, but his shoulder just wouldn't allow it. If he is fully healthy now, though, the team hopes he can get back to what he was. From 2006-2011, McCann made the National League's All-Star team in each year. He hit 20 or more home runs in five out of six of those years. Overall, McCann is a career .279/.351/.475 hitter.

The Atlanta Braves have gotten off to one of the best starts in baseball, and they've been able to do so without catcher Brian McCann. The veteran backstop is recovering from shoulder surgery, but he could rejoin the team soon, as David O'Brien of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports McCann is set to begin his minor league rehab assignment tonight.
Just in case you...
McCann hit two home runs last night in his first rehab game.
With last night’s loss Atlanta no longer has the best record in the major leagues. That distinction is now owned by the Texas Rangers.
The Braves not only lost last night, but they did it in grand style. The 10-0 loss was the worst defeat since May 16, 2009 when the Braves were pasted 12-0 by the Diamondbacks.
♡ It feels like they start the All-Star ballot earlier every year. I was really excited to see Chris Johnson listed as our 3B option, though. He's doing so well this year. Anyway, you know the drill: vote early, vote often.
♡ In case you missed JHey's tweet about his surgery, you can read it here. I especially liked this part, because...
Braves pitcher Brandon Beachy is expected to join the team around mid-season. On Friday the 26-year-old Beachy threw batting practice.
Friday’s session was the latest step forward for Beachy as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery. Thus far Beachy has not run into any problems since he began throwing in spring training.
In 13 starts last season Beachy compiled a 5-5 record...
The Braves return to Atlanta with a game Monday night against the Nationals
After a 12-1 start the Braves have lost three in a row and seven of their last ten games, so is it time for Braves fans to panic? Of course it is time for Braves fans to panic, that is what fans do.
Located in Atlanta the Braves have a lot of fans in the southeast. Ted Turner‘s SuperStation and the...
The Braves knew that going into Colorado they were going to be facing tough weather. However, they had no idea that Colorado would bring a postponed game, a doubleheader, and the loss of right fielder Jason Heyward to a burst appendix. With game 1 postponed due to snow flurries and poor visibility, the Braves and Rockies squared off in a doubleheader Tuesday with a game time temperature...
We hear the justifications every year, when stars struggle early in their debut seasons with new teams: He's adjusting ... He's pressing ... He's settling in ... He's trying to do too much ... It's not easy to change divisions/leagues/cities/positions.
Then there's Justin Upton.
In his first month as an Atlanta Brave, he's been the best player on the...
Today we wore the gray away unis of the Atlanta Black Crackers, and I love these as much as the white ones we wore a couple of years ago. Here are a few pictures...
What a perfect uniform.

Taking three cuts following the Braves' 7-4 loss to the Tigers at Comerica Park on Saturday.
1. Has Medlen come back down to earth?
Kris Medlen got off to an impressively odd start, scoring his first out before pitching a strike.
He walked Austin Jackson on four pitches before picking him off. Medlen now has 12 pickoffs since the start of last season, a figure only bested...

Justin Upton has been off the charts to begin the 2013 season
In the 2012/2013 MLB off-season, a lot of rumors were swirling around the Arizona Diamondbacks and their young 25 year old phenom Justin Upton. Upton was in the middle of all sorts of trade rumors during the 2012 season and was also bothered by a nagging thumb injury in which he sustained in the 3rd game of the Diamondbacks...
Comerica Park was named after a bank that has since moved it’s headquarters to Dallas
The Atlanta Braves will send Paul Maholm, Kris Medlen, and Mike Minor (3M Company) to the mound this weekend when they tangle with the Tigers at Comerica Park in Detroit.
Maholm (3-1, 1.03) ) will square off Friday night against former Miami Marlin, Anibal Sanchez, in a match-up scheduled to start...
Atlanta Braves left-hander Paul Maholm knew his shutout streak would eventually end. Surprisingly, facing the Detroit Tigers could help him put more zeros up on the scoreboard.
Maholm goes for a team-high fourth victory Friday night when the NL East-leading Braves and struggling Tigers meet for the first time in three seasons.
Opening his first full season with Atlanta (15-6),...
10-10, 2nd place, 1.5 games behind KC.
On the heels of an incredibly disappointing 1-5 stretch, the Tigers welcome the best team in baseball thus far, the Atlanta Braves, to the D. The Braves are 15-6 and an incredible 9-4 on the road. Their early season success is entirely attributable to their sparkling pitching. You ready for this?
