Laird has played well in limited action Atlanta Braves catcher Gerald Laird has played very well this season in limited action.  He has caught the majority of Julio Teheran‘s starts in 2013 and his experience has helped the young Braves fireballer immensely. Laird won a World Series ring playing with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2011 and played in the 2012 World Series with the Detroit Tigers.  The Braves are hoping his championship experience pays dividends as they seek to advance deep into the playoffs this season, and hopefully win it all. Q&A With Gerald Laird: Q. You’ve caught and seen great pitchers.  They all seem to have multiple pitches and bring their arsenal every game.  Is that what Teheran is doing now? Gerald Laird:  That is exactly what they do, they come out and bring it every time.  To be successful in the big leagues you have to have two pitches, three pitches an outing.  You can’t just go out there with one pitch or just two pitches. This kid (Teheran)  is putti...

Has Evan Gattis Been Benched?

Sunday’s game against the San Francisco Giants marks the third game in a row and fifth in the last six that power hitting Braves catcher/left fielder/first baseman Evan Gattis did not start.  During the Braves four game losing streak that ended Saturday night, Gattis started only one game. Gattis didn’t start Saturday night’s game against the Giants, but came in and was instrumental...

Braves delay Beachy's return due to tenderness in elbow

ATLANTA -- The Braves' plan for Brandon Beachy's return has hit a snag. Citing tenderness in Beachy's elbow after Thursday's start for Triple-A Gwinnett, general manager Frank Wren announced the right-hander will not start in Tuesday's doubleheader against the Mets. It was slated to be Beachy's first start since undergoing Tommy John surgery on June 21, 2012...

Evan Gattis on Intentional Talk

Your browser does not support iframes. A few people have asked me what I think about his interview, and I don't have the words. He's an odd one, that's for sure. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.) I do think it's cute that he gave his girlfriend a little shoutout, and while I'm sure some girlfriends would take offense at the context, surely she understands...

Brandon Beachy MRI reveals no structural damage

Three Cuts: Bumgarner stifles Braves, Beachy stalled; more

ATLANTA -- Taking three cuts after the Braves' 6-0 loss to the Giants on Friday night at Turner Field. 1. The Braves had no answer for Bumgarner -- yet again There used to be time Atlanta had its way against Madison Bumgarner, tagging him for a 4.30 ERA in his first four starts with four home runs -- the third-most of any team vs. the All-Star in the last three years -- and a...

Braves' Beachy scheduled Tuesday return being held off

Right when Braves Country was embracing their handsome ace to return to the rotation from Tommy John surgery, everyone in the south gasped when news came across the wire Friday evening that Brandon Beachy was scratched  from his highly-anticipated start in Tuesday's doubleheader against the Mets because of elbow tenderness. According to Carroll Rogers of the Atlanta...

Bumgarner gem illustrates Braves' lefty paradox

ATLANTA -- When Madison Bumgarner stares down Braves hitters from 60 feet, six inches away, location has meant everything and nothing this season: everything in terms of pitch location; nothing in terms of venue. The 23-year-old rising star toyed with Atlanta's hitters for the second consecutive time Friday, painting corners, throwing strikes and delivering an arsenal of deceptive...

Catching Up with the Rome Braves

While the Braves’ farm system doesn’t rank highly among evaluators, there are certain patches of talent scattered throughout the organization. One cluster resides in Rome. 2012 first-round pick Lucas Sims, Jose Peraza, Carlos Franco, and a few other interesting prospects make up a team that is currently 36-29. They headed to Lexington for a three-game series, so I headed to Lexington...

Braves 6, Giants 5

B.J. Upton hit two homers off Chad Gaudin, but the Braves trailed 5-4 entering the ninth. Romo (3-3) walked pinch-hitter Evan Gattis, who was replaced by pinch-runner Reed Johnson...

Lincecum the tough-luck loser as Giants are blanked by Braves

Despite a gritty performance by Tim Lincecum, the Atlanta Braves capitalized on every Giants mistake, and San Francisco fell to the Braves 3-0. The Braves drew first blood against Lincecum. Julio Teheran Giants Post Game Q&A

Atlanta Braves starter Julio Teheran was solid Sunday night against the San Francisco Giants, giving up no runs on six hits in six innings in the Braves 3-0 win.  The rookie right-hander struck out eight, while walking only one, as he ran his record on the season to 5-3. Teheran was able to pitch out of jams in his last three innings and went on to allow less than two runs for the...

After a disappointing loss in Atlanta last night behind Sergio Romo’s ninth-inning meltdown, the Giants still have a chance to break even on their current eight-game road trip.
