Atlanta Braves slugger Justin Upton has been ejected after arguing with home plate umpire Paul Nauert while leaving the field after a groundout. Upton broke into a sprint somewhere around the mound during the sixth inning, but manager Fredi Gonzalez was already on the field to keep the two apart. It was unclear what angered Upton, who was 0 for 3 and took a called third strike to end the third on Friday night. Evan Gattis replaced Upton at the second slot in the order and played left field, with Jordan Schafer moving from left to right.

Braves' Justin Upton still hampered by back injury

Atlanta Braves outfielder Justin Upton was held out of the lineup for the second consecutive game last night as he continues to be hampered by an upper-back strain. He was available to pinch-hit last night, and manager Fredi Gonzalez told reporters -- including Chris Iseman of MLB.com -- that he's hoping Upton recovers to the point where he's able to rejoin the lineup in...

Should Braves Fans Lower Expectations?

The Atlanta Braves have now lost Jason Heyward and had more injuries this season than I can remember them ever having.  While the Braves have been able to overcome them up to this point, I’m pondering whether they have enough manpower left to finish with the best record in the National League, and secure home field advantage throughout the playoffs.  Not to mention, be successful...

Atlanta Braves news: Jason Heyward’s injury causes concerns

The Atlanta Braves lost a huge bat in the lineup on Wednesday, as outfielder Jason Heyward fractured his jaw in two places when New York Mets’ pitcher Jonathon Niese hit him in the sixth inning in what would prove to be a 4-1 victory for the Braves. The injury is a very significant one for the Braves’ first round pick from the 2007 MLB Draft, as it will likely be 4-6 weeks before...

Braves' Jason Heyward has surgery on broken jaw

Braves outfielder Jason Heyward had surgery Thursday on his broken right jaw after he was struck by a pitch. The team has not said how long he will be out, but he could miss the rest of the regular season. Dr. Glenn Maron operated in Atlanta, one day after Heyward was injured. He inserted plates in both places where the jaw was fractured. Atlanta has a commanding lead in the NL...

Beachy to see Dr. Andrews to have elbow examined

One day after Jason Heyward was lost for 4-6 weeks with a fractured jaw, the Braves released another potentially tough bit of news as Brandon Beachy will see Dr. James Andrews to have his surgically repaired elbow examined. Beachy has seen a dip in velocity since coming back from Tommy John surgery, with his fastball going from 91.2 mph in his first game back July 29 -- which is...

Braves place Beachy on 15-day DL

The Atlanta Braves have placed Brandon Beachy on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation. The NL East leaders announced Thursday that the right-hander would miss his next start. Outfielder Todd Cunningham was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett before Friday's game against the Cardinals. Beachy allowed three earned runs and five hits in six innings during a 5-3 loss...

Chopcast: Heyward injury puts damper on Braves' recent run

ATLANTA -- The Braves have solidified their place on the short list of World Series contenders in 2013, but no other team on that list has encountered more misfortune in the process. As Jason Heyward's fractured jaw illustrated once more on Wednesday afternoon, Atlanta's 77-49 record has not come without a price. Sure, the Boston Red Sox have played without starter Clay...

Maholm tires in 1st start off DL in loss to Cards

Fresh off the disabled list, Atlanta left-hander Paul Maholm was happy with the way he pitched. At least the first several innings, that is. In his first start since leaving a July 20 outing with a bruised left wrist, Maholm threw four solid innings against St. Louis before running out of gas in the fifth and sixth. ''Everything feels good,'' Maholm said after the...

Three Cuts: Wainwright's gem hands Braves 3-1 loss

The Atlanta Braves were handed their fourth loss in the past seven days as Adam Wainwright and the Cardinals took Game Two of the four-game set in St. Louis. Here are three observations from the game: 1. Wainwright continues his winning ways against the Braves There was no shortage of enthusiasm from the Cardinals' 6-foot-7 ace as the final out of his six-hit complete game...

Three Cuts: Braves drop third straight to surging Cardinals

Here are three things we learned from the Braves' 6-2 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday, the club's third straight defeat: 1. Atlanta's quartet of pitchers had little answers for handling the top of the St. Louis order For the night, the Cardinals' 1-2-3 hitters (Matt Carpenter, Carlos Beltran, Matt Holliday) combined for two homers, four runs, five RBI...

Caray: Depth has been key in Braves getting past injuries

FOX Sports South.com checks in with play-by-play announcer Chip Caray to get the latest on the Braves. FOX SPORTS SOUTH: Jason Heyward is the latest Brave to land on the disabled list, yet despite all the injuries this season, they have continued to produce. What do you credit that to? CHIP CARAY: Depth. General manager Frank Wren made it a point in the offseason to continue...

Preview: Cards look to secure first series victory over Braves in two years

The St. Louis Cardinals are playing much better than the last time they were in the midst of a series with the Atlanta Braves. Looking to continue their surge, the Cardinals try for a fourth consecutive win to secure their first series victory over the Braves in two years Saturday night at Busch Stadium. St. Louis (75-53) scored three times while being swept at Atlanta from July...

Atlanta Braves right-hander Brandon Beachy is slated to meet with renowned – and infamous – surgeon Dr. James Andrews on Monday to have his ailing throwing arm re-evaluated. In the meantime, the Braves have placed Beachy on the 15-day disabled list with elbow inflammation, according to Mark Bowman of MLB.com. Beachy and the Braves are hoping that his current ailment...

Carlos Beltran continues torrid August with home run in win over Atlanta Braves

The St. Louis Cardinals won a third game in a row against the Atlanta Braves on Saturday night with 6-2 vicotry over the NL East leading Braves. This series has been a big difference compared to what happened just a few weeks ago when the Braves swept the Cardinals in a three-game set at Turner Field, a three-game sweep that started a seven-game slide for the Cardinals. A big reason...
