After fouling a ball off his right ankle in Kansas City, Jordan Schafer has not been able to return to full speed. The Braves are hoping some time on the 15-day disabled list will help the young, resurgent outfielder return to form. The franchise placed the 26-year-old on the DL with a right ankle contusion Thursday afternoon. Schafer received sporadic playing time (two pinch-hit appearances) after suffering the injury, but his mobility was visibly limited. Schafer has rejuvenated his career during the first half of the season, hitting .312.399.464 in 146 plate appearances, adding three home runs and 15 RBI. The team's primary base-running threat off the bench, he's also stolen nine bases thus far. Though he's the fourth outfielder on the roster -- behind Jason Heyward and Justin and B.J. Upton -- Schafer has proven himself to be the team's best leadoff option (.409 on-base percentage) when he's in the lineup. Taking Schafer's place on the big league c...

Braves' Evan Gattis resumes baseball activities

Considering he's dealing with an oblique injury, the Atlanta Braves are expected to play it safe with Evan Gattis' recovery. While there's not currently a set timeframe for his return, Gattis took a big step back yesterday as he completed roughly 20 pain-free swings in the indoor batting cage of Turner Field, according to Mark Bowman of MLB.com. The pain-free cuts...

Game Day Pictures: Braves vs Marlins 7-3-13

it rained alllll night Totally didn't go up to our real seats (my church bought group tickets), and instead said hi to an usher friend and sat under cover. We couldn't see the scoreboard but we had TVs overhead that even showed replays! So that was cool. Remember how I have plans to open a t-shirt shop? Well, I wore my #36 sample shirt last night and Alison had to talk me...

Three Cuts: Marlins beat Braves on game-winning single

The Atlanta Braves dropped their second straight game in soggy conditions with a 4-3 loss to the Miami Marlins on Independence Day. Here are three observations from the game: 1. A rare Craig Kimbrel loss sealed the deal for the Braves The Braves bullpen held on as long as it could, but the Marlins eventually found a way to push the game-winning run across -- a bloop single to...

Braves hit snag against Fish, face middle-of-the-pack Phillies

Likely all star Craig Kimbrel surrendered the go-ahead run to the Marlins in the final game of the series. If there is anything more inexplicable than the feast or famine offense for the Braves, it is the way they can sweep one of the better teams in baseball and then drop the following series to presumably the worst team in baseball. That is precisely what happened in the 3-game...

Three Cuts: Marlins trump Braves at soggy Turner Field

ATLANTA Here are three things we learned from the Braves' 6-3 loss to the Marlins on Wednesday, aside from the drainage system at Turner Field has few peers in baseball circles: 1. The genesis of Mike Minor's undoing was a walk to Marlins pitcher Ricky Nolasco For 4 23 innings, Minor bore the look of a burgeoning ace, allowing just one hit and striking out seven. But then...

Three Cuts: Braves' rally falls short in loss to Phils

Friday was the start of an important 10-game stretch for the Philadelphia Phillies. With the fourth-oldest roster in the majors, and a so-so first-half of the season at best, decision-makers have to evaluate the Phillies postseason chances before making any decisions ahead of the July 31 trade deadline. Are they buyers or sellers? With just over week before the All-Star break, this...

Phils Hold On to Beat Braves, 5-4

PHOTO: AP Cliff Lee, who had thrown six innings of shutout baseball, exited Friday after giving up a three run home run that put the Braves within two runs. They would get one more in the inning but the Phillies held on to beat the Braves 5-4. J.C. Ramirez cleaned up the mess that Lee made in the seventh. The offense was able to put up five runs on Braves starter Paul Maholm, and...
