ATLANTA -- Hampered by vision problems for most of the season, Dan Uggla has finally opted for Lasik eye surgery. The Braves announced before Tuesday's game against the Phillies that the second basemen would be placed on the disabled list and following the procedure could be out until September. No date has been set for the surgery. "It was a mutual decision," Uggla said. "Obviously I don't want to go on the DL whatsoever, but at the same time we've got to do what's best for the team right now. Tyler Pastornicky was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett and is starting against Philadelphia. Diagnosed with an Astigmatism in the spring, Uggla didn't consider having surgery then, saying "Until I'm going to be physically affected by it myself, I'm not going to believe it." But mired in the worst season of his career, he began using specialized contacts in July. While he said they did make a difference doctors had been been unable to find the right prescription. He had planned on putting the surgery off until the end of the season, but he felt he had reached a point where the procedure became inevitable. "I've been struggling pretty bad and battling with the contacts and girding with those things day-in and day-out," Uggla said. "I think the best thing to do is to do it now." Uggla's hitting a career-low .186, the lowest batting average among qualified major leaguers. He also leads the team and the National League with 146 strikeouts. But he remains a strong source of power with 21 home runs -- marking the seventh time in eight years he's hit at least 20 -- and he has 62 walks, tops among all Braves and he ranks second in MLB when it comes to swinging at the fewest pitches out of the zone. Uggla's been told his vision should improve in 3-4 days and will be able to return to baseball activities in 7-8 days. Barring any setbacks, he hopes to be back in the Braves' lineup in under two weeks. "I know the smart thing is to let it heal good for at least a week, just because I know I'm going to be out in the dirt," Uggla said. "That's what I do."
